BookPage Fiction Review: Valley of the Dolls
"Valley of the Dolls" was a publishing phenomenon, and its success rests on Susann's understanding of women and their dreams, and her practical experience as an actress.
The 1997 edition of "Valley of the Dolls" is both a period piece and a cause for reflection on just how much growing room women have claimed -- as well as a reminder that the reason some themes recur throughout literature and the popular press is that a good story is always a good story.
Reading "Valley of the Dolls" today is like coming upon a box of old clothes tucked beneath the attic eaves, and upon opening it, finding the outmoded finery captures all too poignantly where, and who, we once were.

This is a brave move because Sindy's biggest challenger since her birth in 1963 has been her American predecessor Barbie (born 1959), who has always carried a physique that, if replicated on a real woman, would cause her to crash regularly to the sidewalk under the pull of mammary gravity.
The makers of Barbie used to respond to knockers of the doll's shape by saying that the full bust was intended to make girls feel comfortable with impending changes to their bodies.
This was clearly nonsense because the dolls' genitals were, notoriously, always suggested rather than suggestive.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Mostly panned by humor-impaired critics upon release, this riotously funny satire of Valley of the Dolls is truly a one-of-a-kind film—a "musical horror sex comedy" in the words of Meyer's screenwriter, Roger Ebert.
Originally hired by 20th Century Fox to direct a legitimate sequel to Valley of the Dolls, Meyer instead decided to send up that howler of a film with this story of an all-female rock band falling prey to the evils of drugs, booze, and sex in sleazy Hollywood.
Along with Myra Breckinridge (1969), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls represented the studio's last-ditch attempt to exploit the Sixties-era sexual revolution for a much-needed box office hit.
