Often the dance rhythm may be indicated in the title, such as vals, schottis, polka, polska, etc., but this may be of little help, even misleading, in determining the exact step or dance best suited to that particular rendition of the music.
In dealing with traditional music and dance it should be noted that names of dances and dance rhythms often differ considerably, both among and within the various lands of origin.

 18th century
Although folksongs and dances had, as rustic showpieces, played an important part in the Hapsburg entertainments for some centuries, it was not until the late 18th century, with the help of their light footwear and polished ballroom, that the Viennese started to transform this folk dance into the smooth gliding participatory 'vals'.
The trend to choreograph dances, which started in the late 17th century, continued apace in the early 18th century, and although many compositions were duets for courtly or theatrical display (the courante, sarabande, allemande, gigue and minuet) many were social 'contre dances'.
In early 18th century England country dance continued to be enjoyed by all layers of society.

After Longoria's move, most of the older genres -- redowa, schottishe, etc. -- were abandoned as the polka and the vocal, in the form of the canción ranchera (either in vals or polka time), became the staples of the modern conjunto.
Indeed, most of the repertory for the dance, or fandango, was of European origin and included the polka, mazurka, and schottishe, in addition to the waltz and redowa.

Among the most notable is Tony de la Rosa, who established the most ideal conjunto sound in the mid-1950s: a slowed-down polka style, delivered in a highly staccato technique that was the logical culmination of Narciso Martinez's emphasis on the treble end of the accordion.
Led by accordionist Paulino Bernal and his brother, bajo sexto player Eloy, El Conjunto Bernal began early on to lift the conjunto style to new heights, as the Bernals' absolute mastery of their instruments allowed the group to probe the very limits of the conjunto style.

Tango Dance Tango Music Tango History - totaltango.com
By the 1940s Tango, Milonga and Vals were inseparable partners, and the three different faces of the same music and dance give Tango its extraordinary depth and richness of expression.
The term Tango Milonga was coined (and Canaro claims in his autobiography to be the one who coined it), to mean Tango for the milonga, that is Tango designed to be danced to.
With the emergence of sung Tangos, and of Tango Fantasía, orchestral Tangos designed to be listened to rather than danced to, it became necessary to differentiate on records and sheet music the different styles.
