Ethics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethics (from Greekἦθος meaning "custom") is the branch of axiology, one of the four major branches of philosophy, which attempts to understand the nature of morality; to distinguish that which is right from that which is wrong.
Ethics has been applied to family structure, sexuality, and how society views the roles of individuals; leading to several distinct and unrelated fields of applied ethics, including feminism.
There are several sub-branches of applied ethics examining the ethical problems of different professions, such as business ethics, medical ethics, engineering ethics and legal ethics, while technology assessment and environmental assessment study the effects and implications of new technologies or projects on nature and society.

sci.engr.* FAQ on Engineers and Ethics
Ethics tend to arise in the career of the individual engineer when a conflict is recognized between professional and corporate obligation.
The ethics of egoism justifies this approach in that, it would be morally wrong for the engineer to act contrary to his interests, even if doing so violates his supposed code of ethics.
The Engineering Code of Ethics is silent on the morality of engineers placing personal feelings over the obligations of their profession when those feelings do not place the public good in jeopardy.

 Aristotle's Ethics
He insists that ethics is not a theoretical discipline: we are asking what the good for human beings is not simply because we want to have knowledge, but because we will be better able to achieve our good if we develop a fuller understanding of what it is to flourish.
Only the Nicomachean Ethics discusses the close relationship between ethical inquiry and politics; only the Nicomachean Ethics examines Solon's dictum that no man should be counted happy until he is dead; and only the Nicomachean Ethics gives a series of arguments for the superiority of the philosophical life to the political life.
Book VII of the Nicomachean Ethics is identical to Book VI of the Eudemian Ethics; for unknown reasons, the editor of the former decided to include within it both the treatment of pleasure that is unique to that work (X.1-5) and the study that is common to both treatises (VII.11-14).

 Feminist Ethics
Ethics is not an individualistic quest; moral value does not emerge from somewhere deep within one's self or from far outside of one's self.
Considered together the overall aim of all feminist approaches to ethics, irrespective of their specific labels, is to create a gender-equal ethics, a moral theory that generates non-sexist moral principles, policies, and practices.
To be sure, from the standpoint of traditional western ethics, a mother's refusal to subordinate the concrete life of her child to the abstract commands of duty or higher law indicates her underdevelopment as a moral agent.

 Ethics
Evolutionary ethics got a bad reputation because of its association with the "naturalistic fallacy": the mistaken belief that human goals and values are determined by, or can be deduced from, natural evolution (Campbell, 1978).
Natural selection entails survival and development (growth, reproduction, adaptation...), summarized in the concept of fitness, as the essential value (see the meaning of life).
For example, it is an open question whether the "cybernetically immortal" cognitive system that would emerge after the next metasystem transition would be embodied most effectively in an individual being ("metabeing"), or in a society of individuals ("superbeing").

 Ethics - Wex
In philosophy, ethics defines what is good for the individual and for society and establishes the nature of duties that people owe themselves and one another.
In some cases these are spoken of as "professional ethics" or in the case of law "legal ethics." For example, the American Medical Association (http://www.ama-assn.org/) has the Principles of Medical Ethics and the American Bar Association (http://www.abanet.org/) has the Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
Generally, failure to comply with a code of professional ethics may result in expulsion from the profession or some lesser sanction.

It lists also those core concepts essential to understanding ethics as applied in various religions, some movements derived from religions, and religions discussed as if they were a theory of ethics making no special claim to divine status.

This category puts articles relevant to well-known ethical (right and wrong, good and bad) debates and decisions in one place - including practical problems long known in philosophy, and the more abstract subjects in law, politics, and some professions and sciences.

This has been a source of great confusion in ethics, where we often have the sense that because "only the means count" and "only the ends count" are logically exclusive (they cannot both be true), they are therefore logical contradictories (the falsehood of one implies that truth of the other), which they are not.
The common definitions of teleological and deontological ethics, in terms of means and ends, result in some logical confusion that is a real source of error in the history of ethics.
