Value (poker) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is in contrast to a bluff or a protection bet (though some bets may have a combination of these motives).
Most of the time, this is because the player believes his hand is valuable in the first sense, and he therefore wants his opponents to put money into the pot that he expects to win from them at showdown.
This is still a value bet, because it is made hoping the opponents will call and build a bigger pot in anticipation of winning (even though the win is only statistical).

Hand (poker) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Without them (which is the most common, and used such games as Chinese poker), the hands are simply no pair, one pair, and three of a kind.
Some poker games are played with a deck that has been stripped of certain cards, usually low-ranking ones.
This is not the case in California, where the nearly identical game is played under the name Double-hand poker using traditional hand values.

Each card also has a value which is one of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, jack, queen, king, ace (denoted 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, T, J, Q, K, A).
If these values are the same, the hands are ranked by the values of the cards not forming the pair, in decreasing order.
If these values are the same the hands are ranked by the value of the remaining card.

Massachusetts Attorney General: June 30, 2005
Assuming that poker is a game of chance, section 7 prohibits all poker tournaments in which players pay an entry fee or something else of value to play a game which offers prizes to the winner(s).
Assuming that all forms of poker are games of chance, it is illegal to promote, operate or play in a poker tournament if a) players pay an entry fee, bet, or otherwise contribute something of value to play and b) prizes of cash or something else of value are awarded to winning players.
Poker tournaments that do not violate Massachusetts lottery laws are still illegal if they allow players or spectators to register bets of money or anything else of value on the result of the game(s), or if they constitute the buying or selling of pools out of which prizes are awarded.

The Concept and Teaching of Place-Value in Math
The use of columnar representation for groups (i.e., "place" value designations) is not an easy concept for children to understand though it is easy for children to learn to read and to write numbers properly, and though it is fairly easy for children to learn color representations of groups, with practice.
Poker chips, used and demonstrated correctly, can serve as an effective practical and conceptual bridge between physical groups and columnar representation, because they are both physical and representational in ways that make sense to children --with minimal demonstration and with monitored, guided, practice.
And by doing this in poker chips with a few sets of numbers, it is fairly easy for the imagination to see that "a" rows of "(b+c)" is the same as "a" rows of "b" plus "a" rows of "c" and vice versa.

Shopping for Value at the Poker Market
At the poker table or away from it, poker presents a broad variety of things to invest in, from the level of starting hands all the way up to the level of deciding to devote your valuable time to the game (instead of, say, taking up painting).
So, when we sit down to analyze a particular poker decision, our goal is often to do the best job we can of converting each alternative into a cash value, and taking the one that represents the best investment.
We make value decisions about the play of a hand, value decisions about investing our time in playing at a particular table, value decisions about poker-related travel and reading, and most of us have devoted some thought to whether what we’re getting out of our involvement in poker is at all worth the effort.

Poker:Expected value - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
The expected value (EV) or expectation of a wager is how much you will win in the "long run" by making that wager.
For example, this situation comes up often in Texas hold'em: a player has four hearts on the turn, and needs to hit a heart on the next and final card to make a flush.
However, as has been shown you can usually figure out if the value is only barely positive, for instance, the size of the pot is a dollar more than the odds of making your hand (and this dollar is small in proportion to the pot size).
