Value over replacement player - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In baseball, value over replacement player (or VORP) is a statistic which demonstrates how much a hitter contributes offensively or how much a pitcher contributes to his team in comparison to a fictitious "replacement player," who is an average fielder at his position and a below average hitter.
VORP's usefulness is in the fact that it measures contribution at the margin.
Other statistics compare players to the league average, which is good for cross-era analysis (example: 90 runs created in 1915 are much better than 90 RC in 1996, because runs were more scarce in 1915).

Total player rating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Total player rating (TPR) is a metric for measuring the value of baseball players, and to enable players to be compared against each other even when they played for different teams, at different positions, and in different eras.
Total player rating is computed using linear weights, in which each event in a baseball game (for instance, a base on balls, a double or a stolen bases) is assigned a value in runs.
Each player then has a rating in Batting Runs, Pitching Runs, and Fielding Runs, usually adjusted for park and position, and the sum of these values is divided by 10 and is expressed as an offset in games from an "average" baseball player.

This is repeated for all of the players.
Then, dollar values are assigned by assuming that the total dollars of all players who have positive differential should add up to the total dollars available (separately for batters and pitchers).
Since the average player has been taken off of the roster, the value which is effectively taken away must be added back in, so after the differential points are tabulated for each player, the average points are added back in to that players differential.

PECOTA Hitting Forecast Glossary and Reference
It is far easier for a player with a baseline of 40 EQR per season to improve upon that figure by 20% than it is for a player with a baseline of 100 EQR per season; as a result, his Breakout score is likely to be higher (see also Ugueto Effect).
Players who improve their EQR/PA by at least 20% are identified by a green, upward-pointing arrow and contribute to a player's Breakout score; players whose EQR/PA decreases by at least 20% are identified by a red, downward-pointing arrow and contribute to a hitter's Collapse score.
VORP, created by Keith Woolner, is an estimate of a hitter's value over and above a replacement-level hitter at his position, as measured in runs.

Replacement level is the *expected* level of performance the average team can obtain if it needs to replace a starting player at minimal cost.
We define a replacement level player as one who hits as far below the league positional average as the league backups do relative to league average, who plays average defense for the position, and is a breakeven base-stealer and baserunner.
VORP is the number of runs contributed beyond what a replacement level player would contribute if given the same percentage of team plate appearances.

Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) both try to quantify how much a batter's contribution exceeds that of a replacement-level player.
BP's Keith Woolner defines a replacement player as "one who hits as far below the league positional average as the league backups do relative to league average, who plays average defense for the position, and is a breakeven base-stealer and baserunner." Basically, a replacement player is a borderline major leaguer.
While he is overpaid for a player of his performance, some of his salary undoubtedly goes toward his "veteran leadership." He undoubtedly exhibits hard work, mental preparation, and good citizenship, attributes that may indeed rub off on younger teammates.

A handy way to compare both position players and pitchers in different leagues and in different seasons, BP's Wins Above Replacement Player is a measure of a given player's contributions in wins, both offensively and defensively, compared with a replacement player at his position.
This is followed by the player's career statistics at the Major and Minor League level with those for the year(s) the player was ranked by BA in grey text.
Miranda was a valuable pitcher in 1993 and continued to contribute modestly for the rest of his tenure with the Brewers.

The key differences is that XW places the player in a team context and measures not only a player’s direct contribution to the team but also his indirect contribution of (hopefully) avoiding outs and giving more opportunities to his teammates.
Some argue that the replacement rate should be set at the value of a utility player, some say it should be at the value of a Triple-A level player, some think you should look at lousy teams to get a sense of what is a proper replacement rate.
Therefore, if a replacement player costs an average team 26.48 direct runs, it would be expected that he would record 26.48/.6463 or 40.97 additional outs more than an average player, given Thomas’ plate appearances.

Again, the player was tremendously successful on a per-at-bat basis, but not all that valuable overall because of his limited use.
Efficiency levels have changed over the years, generally peaking in the early-90s and decreasing ever since (because turnovers must be part of efficiency and cannot simply be ignored as they often are in traditional linear weights systems, I can’t rate seasons before 1979-80).

VORP (Value Over Replacement Level) is a sabermetric analysis developed by Keith Woolner that seeks to measure the contribution, in runs, of a player beyond what a backup (or replacement-level) player would produce for an average team given the same amount of playing time.
VORP is adjusted for park and league, and position (for non-pitchers).
Based on research I conducted and published in Baseball Prospectus 2002, replacement level is set at 80% of the positional average rate of offense for most positions (85% is used for catchers, 75% is used for 1B/DH).

Value Over Replacement Player is a stat created by Keith Woolner, and a good introduction to its use is available at Keith's site.
This is extraordinarily convenient because after doing a VORP comparison from player to player or from year to year you can start to work out the wins a player gives to his team above Replacement Player (rough estimate is that 10 runs contributed or saved is worth 1 win).
VORP is a counting stat, based on usage, and that full list of guys right there, their contributions are based on PECOTA's assumption that combined, they put together 1929 innings (for comparison, the most innings pitched by any team in the NL last year was 1463 [the minimum was 1413]).

 Towards a New Ratings Paradigm
Any value for assists is a complete guess barring a detailed study on how a pass changes a player's likelihood of scoring (which we're working on, but it takes time).
A player's individual rating is simply points created divided by possessions used (multiplied by 100, as I strictly work in points per 100 possessions, on a team or individual level).
We add the player's blocks and steals and divide by estimated defensive positions, to come up with what percentage of possessions he ends himself with a recorded defensive play, then add to that 80% of the league average of blocks + steals per possession (which the other four imaginary teammates are theoretically generating).

Considering that there are so many good offensive players on this team already, it won't make much of a difference that these guys are on the roster, and it will help the crap pitching a bit.
The average life expectancy of an NFL player is 35 years anyway, so it's clear that even if the drugs are illegal, players will do anything for performance, even if it means their own lives, and their children being born with one eye in the middle of their foreheads.
Eventually this controversy will die down, and though most of the players will be juicing up, they won't get caught, and stupid people all over America can believe that their favorite player is "clean".

The older the player is, the greater the likelihood his performance will hit a brick wall next time you try to promote him.
It's interesting to think about this aspect of baseball; that players can be significantly affected in their pocket book and their development by general managers who let them beat up on AA and AAA pitching when they could be playing competitively in the majors.

By using VORP and salaries, you are assuming that every position gets paid the same, but in reality it doesn't, and you don't take into account age which is really important, and what arb year the player is in.
That is, the higher-priced players almost always rank lower on the DPR scale than the lower-priced players in, pretty much, the order of their salaries.
Baseball Prospectus defines replacement level for a position to be about 75% of the league average offensive performance at that position, and VORP is a measure of how many extra runs a player has contributed to the team's offense compared to a replacement level player given the same playing time.

Not only will young players help them build for the future, but they're also cheap, and the Pirates simply don't (or won't) have the resources to reach the playoffs without a core of players performing much better than their salaries.
At the same time, it's way too early to draw firm conclusions from the results on the field, so a player's 2004 stats are usually still much better indicators of his future value than anything he's already done in 2005.
But as a weak hitter with a supposedly strong glove, he'd be most useful as a bench player on a team with a couple of decent pinch-hitting options already on the pine and a very bad defensive outfield.

Half the order is still playing like a group of castoffs, which essentially is what a "replacement player" represents.
Thus, add in the fact that their replacements haven't hit nearly as well as expected, and the 15-11 record looks pretty good, and should only get better.

Pickering's value should be increasing in the post-Moneyball era as his skills have become more valued and so he might be able to bring something the Royals could use in a trade with a contender that needs a lefty bat off the bench.
