To be honest, I'm using more worldcraft 1.6 lately (sacrificing the superb workflow and enhancements of hammer) to catch up with all the movement the newer Quake engines are having.
Bottom line: each new version of hammer should be 100% backwards compatible; I mean, today's hammer should be able to edit and test from Quake to Quake 3 games, passing through the hallife saga and any other engine that uses bsp.
As far as i know, Valve chose to make Hammer a half-life-only editor, and in the EULA they state that using it for other games is prohibited.

The angle system in Terragen and Valve Hammer Editor are not the same (from top view).
As you see, if you would set the "sun heading" in Terragen to 0 degrees, it would appear in VHE as coming from an angle of 180 degrees.
The pitch is set in terragen as a "sun altitude" of 45, so in VHE, which counts the other way, we set it to -45.

Wait I have valve Hammer editor is that for source because it only says Half-Life not Half-Life 2 is there a source version for Hammer?

Hammer already as some fdg files, but you can always download the latest versions, visit the site downloads section to find them.
So browse to their location, make sure the compile tools are located inside the valve hammer editor folder, or it can cause some errors while compiling.

When attempting to start Hammer, the user encounters the message "Extra App ID set to 211, but no SteamAppID" instead, and the editor closes afterward.

You have 4 different programs that do this qbsp, qcsg, qvis and qrad, hammer has this 4 programs by default, but they where made 6 years ago, so you should get the latests version wich is known as zhlct (zoners half-life compile tools), you can get them in our downloads section:
You should also get the latest version of hammer, you probablly have the default 3.4, but there's a 3.5 patch wich you can also get in our donwloads section.

Last time i downloaded it for regular CS, it was full of half-assed programs that i compiled, and i don't even know if it was the full program; it didn't work.
There will be a new Hammer (v 4) for the Source based games.
Valve realizes the majority of their success came from them giving fans the ability to create their own works (CS, DoD, etc) and will definately want to build onto that with the release of HL2.

Sincerely, I think that people haven’t understood very well Valve’s intentions when they improved Hammer Editor with the Input/Output system.
Of course you can use it to open a door, to make explode things and to tell one NPC where to go, but… is like using 1% of the potential of Valve Hammer Editor.

First of you ofcourse need the Valve Hammer Editor installation file.
Gennerally speaking the Collective Valve ERC is a good resource on hl related mapping.
Simply extract the file with winzip and copy it to the same directory in which you installed Valve Hammer Editor 3.4, overwriting the old executable.

This tutorial will show you how to update your pathnames and some other extra bits so Hammer will be setup for Steam and CS 1.6.
The actual location of the VHE folder may vary depending on where you installed VHE.
Next, hopefully you never uninstalled CS 1.5, or atleast made a back up copy of your cstrike folder, because in steam, all the texture wads are locked up in.gcf files, so we can't access them.
