Similar to how Rare's Goldeneye sparked a sort of first-person shooter renaissance in terms of what people thought the genre could accomplish Valve's Half-Life proved that a great shooter can be made when you mix in a real story instead of tacking something on at the end.
With their further free release of Team Fortress Classic designed by the veterans who created the original mod for Quake (who now work for Valve) it appears that the company is also on the forefront of defining the future of cooperative team-play over the Internet as well.
Coupled with a few other key companies Valve is the sort of partner that could begin to help bring the more mature crowd in to their camp.
