Vampires are mythical or folkloric creatures, typically held to be the re-animated corpses of human beings and said to subsist on human and/or animal blood (hematophagy), often having unnatural powers, heightened bodily functions, and/or the ability to physically transform.
Vampires are often described as having a variety of additional powers and character traits, extremely variable in different traditions, and are a frequent subject of folklore, cinema, and contemporary fiction.
A vampire in the grave could be discerned by holes in the earth, an undecomposed corpse with a red face, or having one foot in the corner of the coffin.

Its portrayal of vampirism as a disease (contagious demonic possession), with its undertones of sex, blood, and death, struck a chord in a Victorian England where tuberculosis and syphilis were common.
Though most other works of vampire fiction do not feature Dracula as a character, there is typically a clear inspiration from Stoker, reflected in a fascination with sex and wealth, as well as overwhelmingly frequent use of Gothic settings and iconography.
The vampire was transformed from a creature of disgust and fear into an object of lust, in such films as Camilla (released as La Maldicion De Los Karnstein, 1963), Daughters of Darkness (released as Children Of The Night, 1971), Dracula (1979), and Once Bitten (1985), for just a few examples.

The Vampire was an incredibly popular figure in literature in England last century, with figures such as James Rymer's Varney the Vampire and Dr. John Polidori's Lord Rutven (a caricature of Lord Byron) being as well known then as Dracula is today.
Vampires can look human, can move in human circles, and thus is a perfect device for examining society from an outsiders point of view, and no-one does it better then Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.

The folkloric vampires had been peasants, but in the eighteenth century, authors were still reluctant to make peasants into major characters in stories, so the fictional vampire was moved into the upper classes.
The modern "vampires" derive their inspiration not from the perfectly good material from folklore, which in fact has been sadly neglected, but from the fiction, perhaps because it is more dramatic and coherent.
The baffling part of this is that the modern "vampires" are claiming kinship not with the vampire that our ancestors actually believed in but with the fictional vampire derived from that one.

We have a new vampire fiction coming out with Tor next year, and we've taken it a whole different direction -- making the vampires sentient parasites that "infect" humans and force them to drink blood.
vampires are easy story fodder supported by other writers without or out of creative ideas *and* by a reading audience without terribly discriminating tastes who forever want vampire stories instead of letting the sub-genre fade out for a few years lest they, like romance readers, suffer withdrawal symptoms.
Stephen King wrote one of my favorite short vampire tales with "The Night Flier." When I think of a vampire, the one in "The Night Flier" is the one I definitely would not want to encounter.

I think it was the first vampire fiction I ever read where I was aware that it was actually supposed to be horror (the rather grim covers gave it away somewhat), though looking back on it, I don't really agree with all the Cold War fearmongering.
One of the books I read on vampirism, the author was dismissive of the bloodsuckers, but convinced that the other type, draining their victims of psychic and emotional energy, were a very real phenomena, tying that in to such things as the Icelandic tradition of the night hag and other figures in folklore.
Eroticism is inherent in the vampire's MO, biting and sucking, his seductive appeal, her vampishness, the defiance of conventional standards, and of course the myth dates back to the lamia and that archetypal seductress Lilith.

 Is vampire fiction dead? - Absolute Write Water Cooler
As long as new writers (and experienced writers too) stay away from the Vampire: The Gathering/Anne Rice genre of vampire, I'd say there's always something fresh that can be written.
I do find a lot of people enjoy Vampires and watching the movies and playing role playing games with them and reading the books...the list goes on.
As far as I'm concerned Brian Lumley's 'Necroscope' series is vampire fiction at is very finest.
