Stoner Metal and Sludge Metal are often used interchangeably, but some fans make distinctions: Sludge metal has more similarities with grindcore and hardcore punk.
The genre name is derived from the notion that the artists and audience for this kind of music are stoners (frequent users of marijuana) although the term is more in reference to the style of the music itself rather than the non-musical hobbies of band members and fans.
Stoner metal is best known by its commonly stripped down production, use of psychedelic guitar effects, and deep 70's rock influence from groups like Black Sabbath.
