Van Buren County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan.
Van Buren was U.S. Secretary of State and later vice president under President Andrew Jackson, making it one of Michigan's "Cabinet counties".
In the county the population was spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who were 65 years of age or older.

The Morris cabin hosted Van Buren's first gospel sermon (delivered by the Reverend William Sprague, a Methodist minister who later served in Congress) and witnessed the birth of the county's first pioneer child, Lewis Creighton Morris, who was born on August 4, 1830.
According to Rowland, the county seat war "was in earnest." Meetings were held across Van Buren supporting or opposing the move or the new courthouse.
Paw Paw retained the county seat and soon placed $50,000 in a county building fund that was used to construct a new courthouse that is still used today.

She was born and reared in Van Buren county, and is a daughter of the late Lucius E. and Celina (Wise) Buck, who came to this county from the vicinity of Geneseo, New York, and who here passed the residue of their lives, secure in the high regard of all who knew them.
They came to Van Buren county in 1866, when the subject was less than ten years old, and here resided until their demise, that of the father taking place on February 19, 1906, and that of the latter in June 1881.
Van Fossen was born at Livonia, Livingston county, New York, on July 24, 1826, and is the son of Isaac and Mary (Codding) Van Fossen, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of New York.
