Van Diemen's Land was the original name used by Europeans for the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia.
Complaints from Victorians about recently released convicts from Van Diemen's Land re-offending in Victoria was one of the contributing reasons for the eventual abolition of transportation to Van Diemen's Land in 1853.
Van Diemen's Land is mentioned in Umberto Eco's novel "The Island of the Day Before" ("L'isola del giorno prima", 1994), a story about a 17th century Italian nobleman trapped at an island at the International Date Line.

On 18 July eight men were landed with nine months supplies -- In the first 18 months of operations around 120,000seals were killed.
Apparent that dogs were becoming a menace -- kangaroo dogs went wild and ravaged flocks and herds -- it was feared that they would breed with the aborigines dogs -- by 1830 regulations to restrain dogs in place.
Van Diemen's Land Company ill-advisedly set up a singularly unsuccessfu whaling station operating out of its main base at Circular Head on the north western coast.

A fine and detailed 18th century map issued shortly after Capt. Cook had Furneaux visit Tasman's Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) in 1773 in the "Adventure".
Furneaux concluded there was no strait between Van Diemens Land and New Holland.
However, the ship astronomer Bayly insisted that there were coastal islands and a strait.
