Van Halen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Van Halen is an International rock band based in the United States, and formed in the early 1970s.
Hagar (who sang lead vocals for the band Montrose in the early '70s) was at that time a solo artist coming off a very successful year (his 1984 album VOA had yielded the hit single "I Can't Drive 55'" that peaked at #26 on the pop charts).
Hagar's style enabled Van Halen to become accessible to a wider audience, with lyrics that were more conventional and refined.

Sammy Hagar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hagar disagreed with the decision to record two new tracks on the Twister soundtrack, after the band had agreed to take time off after their 1995(?) world tour, and he maintained his dislike of a greatest hits record at that point in the band's career.
Hagar pulled together his new solo band, called The Waboritas, consisting again of David Lauser on drums, as well as former keyboardist Jesse Harms, and new to the mix was former Busboys guitarist Vic Johnson, and former Tommy Tutone bassist Mona.
Hagar's 2006 tour with The Waboritas also included a segment with Michael Anthony playing as a band called The Other Half (a reference to the non-Van Halen members of Van Halen) for a set of songs in the middle of the show, including both Hagar- and Roth-era tunes.

While I agree with the bulk of Jon's tirade (Hagar's "gimme some pussy" outburst during "Finish What Ya Started" is truly uninspiring), I have to take issue with any attack on the songs "Dreams" and "Right Now." The former for its lyrical capturing of youthful optimism, and the latter for its provocative video.
Right now, Van Halen isn't really Van Halen at all, but Van Hagar, an abysmal marriage of a screaming idiot and a once-pioneering, now-complacent band of rich, unimaginative, resting-on-their-laurels superstars who have actually managed to convince themselves that they are better off without former lead vocalist David Lee Roth.
Van Halen has sold more than 50 million albums to date, and their last three studio albums all went to number one.

I think it's ludicrous that Sammy era Van Halen or Van Hagar as some fans call it is hated so much because there was some great kick ass rock and roll songs like Best Of Both Worlds, Black and Blue and Poundcake even though it was more mainstream than the Dave era of the band.
In my opinion, the reason fans of VAN HALEN don't like Van Hagar, is that VAN HALEN was a great band when DLR was in the band.

Hagar's melodic shriek was once one of hard rock's best -- it's what Jack Black wishes he sounded like in Tenacious D. His vocal power has faded, leaving him to struggle with high notes even on David Lee Roth-originated tunes such as ''Jump'' (although his version of ''Panama'' was dead-on).
Eddie, Anthony, and drummer Alex Van Halen all made good use of their unaccompanied solos (a dinosaur-rock cliché that may be hip again -- blink-182 drummer Travis Barker takes such a solo on the band's current tour).
