Van Halen is an American rock band formed in the early-1970s and discovered by KISS bassist and co-founder Gene Simmons.
Van Halen continued to enjoy tremendous popular success throughout the mid-90's, while many of their hair metal contemporaries (such as Warrant and Poison) fell from favor, overtaken by anti-establishment "Grunge Music".
Van Halen pioneered the way for the modern "Rock and Roll Show" with their extensive use of the concert technical contract rider.

When Van Halen unleashed their debut album on an unsuspecting world in 1978, they singlehandedly redefined hard rock, and set the stage for a long stream of followers emerging in their shadow, each with guitarists performing tricks that were unheard of prior to the introduction of one Eddie Van Halen.
Van Halen II The follow up to Van Halen travels many of the same roads as the first album, although the material isn't quite as strong as it's predecessor.
In it's defense, there's some interesting ideas and songs, but it's not what anyone expected from a Van Halen record, nor was it the convincing album the band needed to make to rebound from losing their beloved former frontman for a second time.

The title of this review fits the Van Halen show at Nissan Pavilion perfectly, as the band is on its third singer Gary Cherone, who seemed to take a lot away from the original Van Halen music.
One of the positives from this show is that the diehard Van Halen fans showed up in full force and were not going to be turned away by the performance of Cherone.
The new tunes from the Van Halen III album such as "Fire in the Hole" were the best thing the band did all night.

The band enjoyed great success with "Van Halen," "1984," and "Fair Warning," until Lee Roth left the band (according to Lee Roth himself, he was kicked out) and pursued a successful solo career.
This version of Van Halen only had a chance to record a couple of new tracks for their "greatest hits" album, and Lee Roth left again (according to Lee Roth, blah, blah).
But this is the heaviest Van Halen stuff I have heard, and it also features some of the most intelligent lyrics Van Halen ever came up with (I know that's a modest compliment, but the lyrics are still quite good).

The main problem with "Van Halen III" ISNT Cherone...its the modernized sound of Van Halen that is the main problem.
Not to say that Van Halen III is terrible, it certaintly isn't any worse than the last two Van Halen albums with Hagar.
So, Van Halen III is fair, probably about equal to Women and Children First, Fair Warning, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance, if you liked any of those albums you'd probably like this one.

Grunge/alternative was in full swing and I expected Van Halen to deliver some good dumbed-down arena rock to take me away from all the plodding, whiny, self-important tripe being put out in that era.
Instead, I got Van Halen's most intellectual album to date, with a lot of moody pieces that seemed to be trying to mimic the climate of the times.
Van Halen proved they could do quasi-speed metal with "Get Up" from "5150", but this is just a sloppy mess.

The bad thing about this album are several of the ballads which maybe are the worst songs ever recorded by Van Halen (like the one with Eddie on the vocal duties).
Gary Cherone does great in his debut performance (and, sadly, also his final performance) with the Might Van Halen and there are plenty of gems on this recording.

Thanks to my former spouse, I attended a Van Halen concert (on the Balance tour, no less) in 1995, but I finally caught a break when Van Halen III was released.
Since Van Halen III is unlistenable, my spouse-at-the-time shunned that record, as did most of the population.

For most of the songs on III, the lyrics were written first by Gary, then Ed wrote the music to fit the lyrics.
If Roth were the singer on III then I think that the CD would have really been terrible (I know some of you already think it is).
Van Halen tried to be something that it wasn't with III (which I'm sure Eddie wanted).

Van Halen III is an interesting album to say the least.
VH III opens with "Neworld", perhaps a fitting opener considering the fact this album is quite a bit of a step out from the usual VH rock.
Stretching their legs I spose, which in itself is a good thing, but I really don't like this kind of thing on a Van Halen album.

On top of the normal guitar doodling of Eddie Van Halen, the normal plodding powerhouse pounding of drummer Alex Van Halen, and the normal chugging basslines of Michael Anthony, Cherone's weak delivery of his lyrics come to the forefront of the mix.
I never thought I'd say this about Van Halen but this song reminds me of another band's song: Led Zeppelin's "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You." Listen to that song and then this one in a row.
What I hope happens is that either the name of the next album is Van Halen IV (with the band's fourth lead vocalist) or that Eddie locks himself into a different studio than 5150 and plays his guts out.
