At age nineteen, Emmett Evan Heflin, Jr., made his Broadway debut, and headlines in Oklahoma City blared "Oklahoma City Boy Crashes Broadway." Born in Walters, Oklahoma, on December 13, 1908 (according to Social Security records), Van Heflin was the son of Dr. Emmett E. and Fannie B. Heflin.
Heflin's sister, Frances Heflin Kaplan, born in Oklahoma City in 1922, had a forty-year stage and screen career and became famous in the role of Mona Tyler, mother of Erika Kane on the daytime series All My Children.
Known as "the actor's actor," Van Heflin died of a heart attack on July 23, 1971, in Hollywood.

What moves it from noir to melodrama for me is that there are two weak motivating actions for the plot; the first (the death of the aunt) doesn't have enough power to justify the drama, and the second (a conviction of an innocent man) is barely mentioned until the end of the movie.
The relationship of Sam and Walter sort of mirrors their childhood but Heflin starts to feel sick about it and begins to like Walter, especially when he finally understands why they are so scared he'll tell something he didn't even know about.
Heflin is solid as always and this is one of the great neglected noirs of the 1940's.
