Van Wilder is exceedingly well-paced and smartly written, by writers Brent Goldberg and David T. Wagner (their love for Ferris Bueller is apparent) who know how to set up not only a joke but sequences of offhand slapstick that are irrepressibly absurd.
Van Wilder is a guy that has friends from everywhere, from the jocks to the nerds.
Van Wilder becomes the subject of a school newspaper editorial and Tara Reid plays the snobby, uptight reporter Gwen whose ties belong to frat boy Richard Bagg (Daniel Cosgrove), who conducts hazing rituals that are crueler than anything since Animal House.

Throughout the movie, Van finally realizes that he needs to graduate and move on with his life, and eventually convinces Reid to fall in love with him.

I thought Van Wilder was going to be similar - and it was, until the lunacy of the plot became too much for me. Already, Van Wilder has a strike against it because the actors are really awful.
I really liked the part where Van Wilder and Gwen had a "fight" at the swim meet and then the movie cut to both of them walking alone around campus while the cheesy Sorority Life song played in the background.
Van Wilder receives a 3/10 rating from Rachel.

In one scene, Van Wilder and his pals manually masturbate their dog, and use its semen to fill pastries, which are then delivered to the evil White frat-boys.

Perhaps one of the biggest pitfalls of "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" is that it is coming out only two weeks after the very similar, much funnier "Sorority Boys," which it sorely pales next to.
While Van Wilder makes for a likable enough lead character, and is played with mucho charisma by Ryan Reynolds (1999's "Dick"), the story he is stuck in remains unfocused and pedestrian.
