A large number of electrons are manually removed from the rubber band and stored on the large smooth sphere, if there were any sharp edges the charge would concentrate there and bleed off into the air.
If you want to show all the neat things a Van de Graff can do (as a toy) keep going and have fun, but if your focus is on static precipitation quit while the experiment is still fresh.

The Van de Graff generator is an impressive electrostatic generator that is capable of producing enormously large static electric potentials.
More modest "class room" sized Van de Graff generators typically produce 100,000 V to 500,000 V. The Van de Graff generator is named after Dr. Robert J. Van de Graff who patented his electrostatic generator in 1935.
As the generator continues to charge, a potential difference between the sphere and the grounded base of the Van de Graff can reach nearly one-half of a million volts.

BBC - Classic Rock/Pop Review - Van Der Graaf Generator, Present
Along with King Crimson (at least in their mid 70s incarnation), VDGG were the prog band it was (almost) OK to like, and certainly one of the very few that exerted any influence on the punk movement.
VDGG music was brash, complex, difficult; their performances were driven less by instrumental flash or laser light shows than sheer, desperate energy and an uncompromising intellectual clarity.
VDGG is still a recent discovery for me, but its one of the most importants in many years. What a great music they did in this new one.Fantastic.When i read about a reunion from VDGG i Didn't believe they still have the capacity to make good and innovative music.

 The Van de Graaff generator
All Van de Graaff machines for research and industrial purposes came to be enclosed in a (vertical or horizontal) cylindrical or cigar-shaped pressure tank, a departure from the typical column-and-sphere design.
The voltage is generated by an endless-belt which is in a column (or horizontal tube) with equipotential rings whose open terminals are grounded while the cylindrical collector in the middle of the column is brought to a high voltage (we imagine +) by the charges carried by the belt.
If the Van de Graaff generator continues to have a brilliant career in the field of high energy physics, astrophysics and in several industrial applications as research and professional apparatus, in its simplest form it also proves to be extremely popular as didactic instrument.

A device designed to generate large sparks of static electricity was produced in the 1930s by Robert van de Graaf, an American physicist.
The electrode is held 3 to 4 inches from the dome of the generator (it is important to remember to ground the electrode to the binding post on the base of the generator to avoid unnecessary shocks!).

 The Van de Graaff Generator
The electrostatic machine known as the Van de Graaff generator was invented by Robert J. Van de Graaff, in the USA, by 1929, with the objective of generating high voltages for experiments in nuclear physics.
After the initial experiments with generators operating in air, high-power Van de Graaff generators were built, operating in tanks of compressed air, and later other gases, achieving several megavolts of output voltage and much higher output current than would be possible in the basic machine [p98].
The Van de Graaff generator is common in a variety of tabletop models for demonstrations and experiments with electrostatics, usually in unipolar configuration.

Originally formed way back in 1967 - memorably named after the machine that generates huge electrical charges - VDGG were the very first signing to Charisma Records, their debut UK album being released by the fledgling Charisma in January 1970, some 35 years ago.
VDGG played shows with amongst others Jimi Hendrix, T Rex, Pink Floyd and label mates Genesis, and enjoyed many, many wonderful and some less than wonderful adventures.
The eventual split came in 1978, after 9 albums as a group, all but one for Charisma, including the exceptional Pawn Hearts (1971) and Godbluff (1975), to mention just two of their classic albums.
