 South Africa: Pollution row goes to open court
The residents of Vanderbijlpark's Steel Valley say the giant Iscor steel producer - Africa's largest - has polluted their water, degraded their environment and brought sickness to their families for forty years - and they want compensation for their plight.
Sixteen families from the community surrounding the plant, in the Vanderbijlpark, in South Africa's Gauteng Province, have taken the industrial giant to court.
Samson Mokoena, chairman of the Steel Valley Crisis Committee and spokesperson for the residents told the BBC prior to the lifting of the ban that many people had lost their homes and animals to pollution and plant expansion.

Although Gauteng is the smallest of the nine South African province in terms of land size, it is the economic powerhouse of South Africa and the Gauteng province generates the highest property transfers per year in terms of national property sales.

Iscor employees were told last year to destroy documents that might point to its polluting ground and runoff water in Vanderbijlpark, the newspaper Beeld reported on Friday.
In a "top-secret" email sent to Iscor management staff at the Vanderbijlpark works by Dr Ockie Fourie, charged with developing a master plan for rehabilitation of the polluted area, Fourie said that only his consultant team would be allowed to possess such documents.
According to an abbreviated version of the master plan, made available to the Vanderbijlpark community, it is going to cost Iscor R1.6-billion over the next 20 years to rehabilitate the area around the Vanderbijlpark works.

Despite Vanderbijlpark's average house price having risen by around 25 percent in the last year, residential buying activity in the entry level and middle market sectors remains strong, with predictions of 12 percent growth for the year.
