It was of course a dream for Vanessa Beecroft to stage one of her tableaux-vivants in such a sublimely reflexive architecture, and considering her emotional attachment to Berlin, where she used to visit her grandmother in the former East German part of the city.
Despite Beecroft's set of rules that are allegedly "interpreted" by the models, none of the living sculptures fainted from the voyeuristic gaze of the amateurs in the audience (though mercifully both a psychoanalyst and an emergency nurse were on the ground ready to intervene.
Notwithstanding the current attention for process-oriented art, Beecroft is keen to refer to Italian Mannerist painting or Neo-Classical sculpture rather than performances by Yves Klein or Gilbert & George, and even with her mimetic predilection for Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s cinema she avoids the inclination toward lesbian sadomasochism.

Beecroft has said that the whole purpose of starting her "Book of Food," which is, in essence, a bulimic's diary, was to show it to a doctor, and to get professional help for and perspective on her obsession.
I personally find the earlier Beecroft pieces, in which the girls aren't so perfect, and in which there is a much greater variety of bodies, much more eloquent and moving, because of their vulnerability.

Fashion is used by Beecroft not to individuate but to homogenize, and even nudity is exploited not as an expression of sexuality but rather as a way of reducing the models to an appearance of sameness — nudity is, after all, the original uniform.
Beecroft frequently refers to her girls as an "army," thus implicitly positioning herself as commander or general.
And perhaps at such a point Beecroft’s cruel classicism inspires one of her models to remark that, although there are conventions regarding the usage of human beings in science and war, there are none in art.

Vanessa Beecroft's performances, on the other hand, invite us to gawk at living, breathing men and women, human statues of a sort, who stand still and submit to viewers' stares without returning them.
Modeling is all about representation, particularly self-representation; in that sense models are already almost sculpture, as attested by the word "mannequin" applying to both a human and an artificial fig ure.
Despite the clear contrasts with her earlier work--female versus male, private versus public, seduction versus force, and so on--an unexpected continuity emerges, for although military personnel are not normally considered in terms of appearance, the disciplined stylization of every detail of their carriage, dress, and demeanor attests to a certain essential representational aspect.
