Red-shouldered Vanga Calicalicus rufocarpalis is recognized by Clements as a new species, range southwestern desert of Madagascar, described as a new species in 1997.
Quotation from the book's description of the Red-shouldered Vanga: "Can be confused only with the Red-tailed Vanga, from which the male differs in its larger size, longer tail and bill and, when seen close to, its pale (not dark) eye, which is diagnostic.
Certainly the pale eyes suggest Red-shouldered Vanga, but the lack of red shoulder on the female is adversary to a change of identification.

 Vanga family
All the vangas require woodland of some type — from thick humid jungle to dry open spiny forest — and so are good indicators of the presence of native habitat.
Taxonomically, the vangas were known to be related to African families such as the helmetshrikes, wattle-eyes and batises (indeed, Sibley and Ahlquist 1990 and Sibley and Monroe 1990 lumped all these groups together) but most authorities considered them a separate family (e.g., Dickinson 2003).
These data show that helmet-shrikes and vangas are very closely related, and it possible that in the long run these two families may be grouped together.
