Vangiones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fate of Vangionic troops of in Britain is uncertain.
The Vangiones are mentioned in Caesar's De Bello Gallico as a unit among the copiae ("forces") of Ariovistus (1.51).
The Vangiones appear solidly in the works of Tacitus, a writer of the 1st century CE of some authenticity and credibility, having been a Roman of fairly high office himself.

CONDERCVM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Although a detachment of the British Fleet is known to have built the granary at Benwell, is is extremely unlikely that any of these men were permanently stationed here.
An inscription found at Cilurnum (Chesters) confirms the presence of the First Cohort of Vangiones in the late-second century, and it is very likely that the unit was divided between these two forts at this time.
The unit is recorded on an altar dedicated to the god Antenociticus (vide RIB 1328 infra), and also on a single tombstone of a soldier from the unit (vide supra).

The Vangiones were a Belgic tribe from the upper Rhine.
The First Cohort of Vangiones was a mixed unit of both horse and foot soldiers known as a cohors equitata, and were a nominal one-thousand strong (cohors milliaria).
It is possible that they were split into two quingenary cohorts during the Hadrianic period as they are attested bot at Chesters in Northumberland and also at Benwell in Tyne & Wear, both forts on Hadrian's Wall.

This temple was dedicated to Antenociticus, who could have been a local God, or one favoured by the Vangiones, troops from the upper Rhineland, Germany, based at the fort.
At the far end of the temple there was a stone block for the statue of the God, with an altar on either side.

Histories by P Cornelius Tacitus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
He was sister's son to Civilis, and he was hated by his uncle and hated him in return with all the extreme bitterness of a family feud.
Tutor, having augmented the army of the Treveri with fresh levies from the Vangiones, the Caeracates, and the Triboci, strengthened it with a force of veteran infantry and cavalry, men from the legions whom he had either corrupted by promises or overborne by intimidation.
Avoiding Mogontiacum, Tutor retired with the Treveri to Bingium, trusting to the strength of the position, as he had broken down the bridge over the river Nava.

It has about 42,000 inhabitants, of whom two-thirds are Protestants, about one-third Roman Catholic, and 2,500 are Jews.
Its name in the Roman period was Borbetomagus, in a Celtic district, and it was the seat of the Vangiones, a small tribe settled there by Julius Cmsar, where arose the civitas Vangionum.
In the fifth century it came under the Burgundians, and there the legends of Gunther and Brunhilde, Siegfried and Kriemhild, and later of Eginhard and Emma are laid.

Chesters Roman Fort on Hadrians Wall, Northumberland
Hadrian himself encouraged the "Cult of Disciplina" amongst legions stationed at the wall, and an early inscription on an altar dedicated to Disciplina, found in 1978, indicates the earliest known military presence was a wing of cavalry; ala Augusta ob virtutem appellata ("named Augusta because of its valour").
The Roman Army was made up of people who enlisted from all over the Empire, and inscriptions have been found showing that those garrisoned here included the First Cohort of Dalmatians (present day Yugoslavia) and the First Cohort of Vangiones from Upper Rhineland in Germany.
It seems that Cilurnum was built to house cavalry capable of rapid strikes into the "barbarian" north, but it is not known how many times it was called upon to fulfill this function.

i-Friesland: History: Tacitus - Tribes of Germania
The Treverians and Nervians aspire passionately to the reputation of being descended from the Germans; since by the glory of this original, they would escape all imputation of resembling the Gauls in person and effeminacy.
Such as dwell upon the bank of the Rhine, the Vangiones, the Tribocians, and the Nemetes, are without doubt all Germans.
Of all these nations, the Batavians are the most signal in bravery.
