Scrolling shooters are further divided into horizontal (side view) and vertical (top view) shoot 'em ups, but there are also some borderline cases like alternating horizontal and vertical stages in Konami's Axelay, or even 3-D graphics and third-person perspective like in Nintendo's Star Fox, which is, at heart, still a shoot 'em up.

From: Allen Park, MI I like Vanguard for the 2600, you have to keep in mind that the 2600 was not a powerful system and with what little it has I think the Vanguard is pretty good.
Vanguard was the first 2600 game I bought when my uncle gave his system back in 1986.
It's been years since I last played Vanguard on the 2600 so some of the minute details have been lost on me. But I do vaguely remember something about waiting until the last possible second to kill off the boss after it was explained here.

With only one button, Atari's home version of Vanguard allowed players to dispense with the arcade's compass rose of fire buttons; for lack of any better way to handle it, this version of Vanguard just unleashed white-hot electric death in all directions everytime the fire button was pressed.
