Vanguard Records was a record label set up in 1950 by brothers Maynard and Seymour Solomon in New York.
By the early 1970s, Vanguard released albums by Michigan based rock groups such as Dick Wagner and The Frost and was inspired by an off the wall novelty hit they released, Shaving Cream by Benny Bell, to release albums of funny music inspired by Dr.
Vanguard Classics Records is today owned by Artemis Records and also releases new material as well as its back catalog of classical music.

Over the years, Vanguard Records has provided a home for an amazing range of the very best performers of American folk music, and there's no doubt that Tom Paxton is one of the very best.
In the midst of the Great Folk Scare of the early sixties, Vanguard was the official label of the legendary Newport Folk Festival, and they captured Paxton on the stages of the festival in 1963 and 1964.
The second tour of duty Paxton performed for Vanguard was in 1977-78, and the remainder of the album consists of songs drawn from the two albums he recorded for the label during that period.

He entered the record business himself in 1950, when he went to Vienna and recorded the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera performing the Bach cantatas.
Several months later, Solomon and his brother Maynard founded the Vanguard Recording Society, which began releasing folk and classical music on the newly invented LP, or long-playing record.
In 1985, the Solomons sold the label to the Welk Recording Group, but Seymour Solomon purchased the classical catalog back from the company in 1990 and began releasing its recordings on CD under the Omega and Vanguard Classics labels.
