The Vanguard class of submarines are nuclear powered which means they can run submerged for long periods of time: their only limiting factor being the need for food.
Since 1998 Vanguard class submarines not on patrol have been able to make port visits, something which the Resolution class were never permitted, and which gives a unique chance to see one of these huge vessels (4 times the displacement of a Type 23 frigate).

The Astute-class of submarine comprises the largest nuclear-powered attack submarines to be built for the Royal Navy.
Original plans were for seven boats of the Astute class to replace five Swiftsure-class submarines (Sovereign[?], Superb[?], Sceptre[?], Spartan[?], and Splendid[?]) and the two oldest Trafalgar-class boats (Trafalgar[?] and Turbulent[?].
These names were last given to Amphion class submarines that entered service towards the end of World War II.

The missiles are carried in vertical tubes in the mid section of the submarine and are fired from beneath the surface.
When fired, a missile is ejected from the submarine by high pressure gas and only when it breaks the surface does the first rocket stage actually fire.
In spite of their huge size they are among the quietest submarines in the world and are extremely difficult to detect.
