H.5 What is vanguardism and why do anarchists reject it?
For vanguardism, the abstract theory of socialism exists prior to the class struggle and exists waiting to be brought to the masses by the educated few.
Based on the idea that the party must be a highly disciplined fighting force, the party is endowed with a powerful central committee and a rule that all members must publicly defend the agreed-upon positions of the party and the decisions of the central committee, whatever opinions they might hold to the contrary in private.
The modern day effectiveness of the vanguard party can be seen by the strange fact that many Leninists fail to join any of the existing parties due to their bureaucratic internal organisation and that many members are expelled (or leave in disgust) due to their attempts to make them more democratic.

 Expertise and Vanguard Parties
Such parties are thus usually made up of and led by those with a deeper understanding of what is going on in society, and how it affects the interests of their class.
That is all that the word 'vanguard' was meant to mean—those who are out in front in leading the rest in a struggle for their collective class interests.
And when such a party has come into being here, and is actually leading a major part of the masses in struggle, it will in fact be a vanguard party—though it will not be necessary to proclaim this.

Chris here would still maintain the need for a party to draw the lessons for publication and discussion after and that was needed.
In "State and Revolution" there is nothing that raises the Bolsheviks into an institutional vangard sanctioned by historical right, a privileged vanguard separated from the masses in whose name it rules behind the screen of the Soviets.

 Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Vanguard Progressive Unionist Party
The Vanguard Progressive Unionist Party, also known as the Vanguard Ulster Progressive Party (and several variations of word order), was a unionist political party which existed in Northern Ireland between 1973 and 1978.
It has its roots in the Vanguard or Ulster Vanguard wing of the Ulster Unionist Party who were opposed to the moderate policies of the party's leader and last Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Brian Faulkner.
The party contested a succession of elections: to the brief Sunningdale Assembly, the February 1974 General Election, the October 1974 General Election and the 1975 elections to the Constitutional Convention.

Martin Ross - If You Dump Lenin You Enfeeble Our Labor Line
Lenin never spoke of a party passively waiting to be recognized as deserving of "respect." Moreover, the CPUSA does not have to live down a history of immodest boasting about a leading role not really earned. There is no such history.
That the party of a new type must be a vanguard party was an essential theory of Lenin.
It is hard to see how the Party's industrial concentration policy can long survive such a Party program, the main practical, concrete form our struggle to achieve leadership of the US working class movement takes.

The Revolutionary Party (Don Cuckson)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The class vanguard is composed of all those, irrespective of party affiliation or social origin, who are at the sharp end in the struggle against capital.
These workers may be in the `vanguard', but not by virtue of their membership of this or that organisation, only because of their position in the struggle against capital.
The Party is used as an `instrument' to control the class in its spontaneous revolutionary action, and then to operate the `dictatorship of the proletariat' in the name of the class.

RW ONLINE:MLM vs. Anarchism: Why Do We Need A Vanguard Party
Rather, the vanguard party needs to exist because, given the contradictions in class-divided society, the exploiting system and the class forces that represent and rule in that system cannot be overthrown and finally abolished without such a vanguard party.
And, further, it is crucial to lead the masses to continually revolutionize the party as a crucial aspect of revolutionizing society overall and carrying forward the advance toward communism as part of the world proletarian revolution.
And the continuing need for the vanguard, even after the overthrow of the old system and the establishment of the new, socialist society, is owing to the continuation of these underlying contradictions, although the situation in socialist society is qualitatively different than in capitalist society.

Propaganda and Agitation in Building the Revolutionary Party
This vanguard party would have to be tightly disciplined to be able to respond to the twists and turns of the class struggle, to resist repression, and to politically combat those who sought to mislead the working class.
Although the vanguard party would be politically distinct from the mass of workers, its members would participate side by side with their fellow workers in all struggles, seeking to raise their revolutionary consciousness.
The key tasks of the revolutionary propagandist are to support the vanguard workers who lead their fellow workers effectively, show them the tactics to use when they are in doubt, and convince them of the need for a revolutionary party and Marxist theory to lead the struggles to the socialist revolution.

H.8 What is vanguardism and why do anarchists reject it?
Vanguard parties are based on the principle of "democratic centralism" (see section H.8.5).
Secondly, as we discuss in section H.4, the Bolshevik party had been gerrymandering and disbanding soviets before the start of the Civil War, so proving that it cannot be held accountable for this process of substitution.
Even more significantly, given our discussion on the influence of the party structure on post-revolutionary society in section H.8.7, they argue that "[w]orst of all, the SWP are training a layer of revolutionaries to believe that the organisational norms of the SWP are a shining example of proletarian democracy, applicable to a future socialist society.

 Socialist Viewpoint
The Leninist theory of the vanguard party is based on two factors: the heterogeneity of the working class and the exceptionally conscious character of the movement for socialism.
The vanguard party, guided by the methods of scientific socialism and totally dedicated to the welfare of the toiling masses and all victims of oppression, must always be in principled opposition to the guardians and institutions of class society.
The Socialist Workers Party regards itself as the legitimate inheritor of the finest traditions of the Socialist movement of Debs, the Socialist Labor Party of De Leon, the IWW of St. John and Haywood, and the early Communist Party.

Should a genuine Maoist single-nationality party form outside of MIM circles, MIM will determines whether or not that party is the vanguard of the oppressed nation in question.
In the event of the formation of a Maoist single-nationality party, MIM will struggle to inform its members of the views of the single nationality party, remain on good terms with all genuine Maoist groups and leave open party membership to the decisions of individual oppressed nationality comrades.

Why an Anarchist Organization is Needed... But Not a "Vanguard Party" | NEFAC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Leninists conceive of their party as a centralized organization--under “democratic centralism.” This is based on their vision of socialism, which they understand to be a centralized economy managed by a centralized state.
The party was continually being shattered and reconstituted, with the result that until it took power it never really hardened into a fully centralized, bureaucratic, hierarchical machine.
The centralized, monolithic, party was not the party of the revolution but the party of counterrevolution.

Why we need to build a "vanguard" party
Lenin and the Bolsheviks were a vanguard in the true sense of the word--not isolated cranks.
Lenin's insistence on the need for a revolutionary party is based on the idea that the working class can't be liberated by anyone standing over or outside its ranks.
At the heart of Lenin's concept of the "vanguard" party is the simple idea that working-class militants and other activists who have come to the conclusion that the whole system must be dismantled must come together into a single organization in order to centralize and coordinate their efforts against the system.
