Vanilla Sky is one of those films that made you think, instead of having some Hollywood producer, or director, doing the thinking for you.
Vanilla Sky switches back and forth from the supposed here and now to a later time when Aames is in prison, accused of murder.
Vanilla sky is about a young man so submersed in pop culture that he is unable to connect with people (the opening scene wonderfully suggests this).

Vanilla Sky may be the most pleasant ruse perpetrated on the American public since Eyes Wide Shut, which is ironic because they are essentially the same con.
Vanilla Sky, I believe, only works if the ruse is intact - audience members too much in the know will wait impatiently for plot twists of increasing weirdness to emerge, for the best stuff coming towards the end.

In Vanilla Sky, Tom Cruise plays David Aames, Jr., a brash young publisher who is wealthy, successful, and very sure of himself, and who takes things much too lightly (as evidenced by one of his enterprises, a glossy magazine that resembles Maxim).
Vanilla Sky has some painfully obvious business involving David wearing, or carrying around, a smooth latex mask, which looks like something out of a Laura Branagan music video.
After all the gimcrackery, Vanilla Sky ends up telling us, yeah, life is fine, as long as you have, say, a really good alarm clock stashed in case of emergencies.

"Vanilla Sky" moves slowly and could have used a few little clips here and there to aid the pace of the 136 minute picture.
SOUND: "Vanilla Sky" is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, but this is not a particularly active soundtrack.
Paramount still continues to show improvements in their DVD releases and "Vanilla Sky" is another very nice effort, combining a fine presentation of the film with great supplements.

Sky is probably the most disappointing release yet from Oscar-winning Almost Famous writer/director Cameron Crowe (perhaps because it's so much less personal than his previous work).
Of course, Sky looks much better because of its big stars and healthy budget, which was over 200 times larger than Ojos'.
He thinks it's all a conspiracy cooked up by the board of directors, since they can only wrestle control of the company away from David if he is declared mentally unfit (with Sky, Waking Life, A Beautiful Mind and Memento, 2001 may forever be known as the Year of the Dreamy Psychosis).

"Vanilla Sky" is the BEST film of the year.
Whenever I go to the theaters with a group of friends to watch a movie as bizarre as "Vanilla Sky", I am usually the sole person to appreciate it, with the other members of my group loathing every second of it.
At two hours and twenty-five minutes, "Vanilla Sky" is protracted and somewhat dragging, but it's a brilliantly original motion picture that you soon won't forget.

Had she been given the Sofia role and the ever-reliable Kurt Russell (appearing as a criminal psychologist or something) the lead, Vanilla Sky would at least be spared a somehow greasier than usual Tom Cruise and Penélope Cruz continuing her hard-won slide into obscurity.

These two made "Jerry Maguire" together and could've probably spent the rest of their careers making "Jerry Maguire 2, 3 and 24." Just their willingness to tackle something like "Vanilla Sky" gives the picture a kind of odd courage.
A lot of critics are going to call "Vanilla Sky" too vanilla (as in bland.) Let's say here that the vanilla part isn't so bad; they just should've added some chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough to give the movie some texture and edge.
