eMedicine - Vanishing Twin Syndrome : Article Excerpt by: Ann L Anderson-Berry, MD
In vanishing twin syndrome, there may be complete reabsorption of a fetus, formation of a fetus papyraceus (ie, a "mummified" or compressed fetus), or development of a subtle abnormality on the placenta such as a cyst, subchorionic fibrin, or amorphous material.
Vanishing twin syndrome occurs in 21-30% of multifetal gestation.
Researchers hypothesize that, in twins connected through vascular connection by placental anastomoses, temporary hypotension in the surviving twin at the time of fetal demise of the vanishing twin leads to poor perfusion and skin necrosis.

 Vanishing Twin Syndrome - Twins
When vanishing twin syndrome occurs in the first trimester, there is little effect on the mother or the surviving fetus.
However, when the twin vanishes in the second or third trimester, there is a higher likelihood of effect on the other fetus, such as a higher incidence of cerebral palsy, and a possibly a threat to the viability of the pregnancy in general.
Most vanishing twins are reabsorbed into the placenta or be compressed by the pressure of the remaining fetus and its amniotic sac.

I’m glad I did -- The Vanishing Point is a well-researched historical novel with complex characters and enough plot twists and surprises to keep readers guessing and second-guessing right up to the end.
It could do with far fewer details about the main characters’ sexual escapades (unless, of course, you like that sort of thing -- I found it tedious and a needless distraction), but in other instances, the rich period detail truly gives the flavor of life in 17th-century Maryland, where most of the story is set.
Mary Sharratt is in town this week and will be reading from The Vanishing Point while wearing a 17th-century-style outfit -- and she will raffle off a copy of the book to a member of the audience who also dresses in period costume.
