  Filmtracks: Vanity Fair (Mychael Danna)
Vanity Fair: (Mychael Danna) Modern moviegoers may not realize the lengthy history of the Vanity Fair story in film; the classic novel by William Makepeace Thackeray has been translated to the big screen six times, but four of those films were produced in the silent era and the two others were viewed in the 1930's.
In case you are unfamiliar about the story, Vanity Fair follows the ambitions of Rebecca (Becky) Sharp, a clever girl born into the lower classes of London circa 1820.
Vanity Fair is a strong score, and despite unexplored artistic avenues, Danna should be commended for this effort.

As an actor, especially lately, Witherspoon (Legally Blonde 2, Sweet Home Alabama) has played down her acting ability and played up her 'perkiness.' What most people don't realize is that she recently made The Importance of Being Earnest, and did lots of 'acting' earlier in her career.
Vanity Fair is not the greatest move for Witherspoon, primarily because it is not much of a movie.
Vanity Fair tells of Becky Sharp's (Witherspoon) rapid ascent up the social ladder in the early 1800s.

  DVD Talk Review: Vanity Fair
Unfortunately, the reality of Vanity Fair is that it is simply a long, muddled mess, and the only effect of the lavish visuals is to sucker the viewer into sticking it out through far too much of the bloated 141-minute film.
Vanity Fair gets off to a rocky start, with a series of abrupt transitions from one time and place to the next, with little indication of a connecting thread apart from the presence of Becky Sharp.
By the third or fourth sudden change of scene, I had come to the conclusion that Vanity Fair was going to be more or less a picaresque story, with Becky encountering various different people and situations as she attempted to climb her way up the social ladder.

A Vanity Fair article "misrepresents" statements made by Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz about U.S. justification for the invasion of Iraq, Pentagon officials said.
A news release promoting the Vanity Fair article said Wolfowitz was contradicting the Bush administration by saying that weapons of mass destruction had never been the most compelling justification for invading Iraq.
The distinction between the two versions is important because one of the main premises in the debate for the invasion of Iraq was a need to rid Saddam Hussein's regime of weapons of mass destruction.

Vanity Fair (Wordsworth Classics) by William Makepeace Thackeray
Vanity Fair is a novel which suffered greatly for the period in which it was released, though it is probably the only the novel that can challenge War and Peace.
In itself, though there are dozens of secondary characters, the plot is simple, using two contrasting pairs: George Osborne, the archetypical cad, marries Amelia Sedley while, unbeknownst to him and her, his good friend William Dobbin is infatuated with Amelia.
