Vanity Fair (2004) - A Hollywood Jesus Movie Review
When “Vanity Fair” was first published in 1847-48, author William Makepeace Thackeray subtitled his classic “A Novel Without A Hero.” In serial installments, the Indian-born writer satirized the universal human folly of seeking after the treasures of Vanity Fair – money, prestige and social status – as the primary aim in life.
In an era when Hollywood screenwriters study the hero’s journey as a common framework for successful films, it was perhaps inevitable that ruthlessly determined Becky Sharp would be cast as a hero, rather than as someone who achieves her ambition at tremendous cost to the lives of those around her.
Vanity Fair is the type of story for which words like “chicanery” and “conniving” were invented.

 Filmtracks: Vanity Fair (Mychael Danna)
Vanity Fair: (Mychael Danna) Modern moviegoers may not realize the lengthy history of the Vanity Fair story in film; the classic novel by William Makepeace Thackeray has been translated to the big screen six times, but four of those films were produced in the silent era and the two others were viewed in the 1930's.
In case you are unfamiliar about the story, Vanity Fair follows the ambitions of Rebecca (Becky) Sharp, a clever girl born into the lower classes of London circa 1820.
Vanity Fair is a strong score, and despite unexplored artistic avenues, Danna should be commended for this effort.

The peculiar quality of Vanity Fair, which sets it aside from the Austen adaptations such as "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice," is that it's not about very nice people.
The first part of the film, which introduces Becky and her various run-ins with bachelors and her new home, is well-paced and entertaining.
I suppose the film is more realistic than others of its ilk because Becky certainly doesn't become one of the most likable people in the world by the end of this bildungsroman.

"Vanity Fair," full of elaborate costumes and settings, is still a cold exercise in which an overmatched Reese Witherspoon grapples with an empty script.
While Witherspoon was pluckily perfect as Elle Woods in the "Legally Blonde" films, her Becky Sharp leaves much to be desired (I couldn't help but wonder what Nicole Kidman might have done with this part).
"Vanity Fair" (the book) demands grandeur, opulent parties and ornate costumes sporting much décolletage, and while these are very much in evidence, "Vanity Fair" (the movie) feels like a sumptuous masque to which nobody bothered to invite the guest of honor.

Vanity Fair (2004): Reese Witherspoon, Bob Hoskins, Romola Garai, Eileen Atkins - PopMatters Film Review
According to Mira Nair's Vanity Fair, adapted from William Makepeace Thackery's lengthy novel, Becky Sharp (Reese Witherspoon) has everything going for her, in particular the fact that she's the star of this lightweight, episodic social-climbing adventure.
The film paints her as an ambitious, essentially good-hearted girl, less ruthless than in the novel and more admirable.
Then again, "history" is hardly the subject of Vanity Fair, which attends instead -- when it's not marching through bits of plot -- to the ways that "facts" are shaped to accommodate the images and needs of those writing it.

Nair, eschewing the prudishness of so many cinematic adaptations of Victorian classics, drenches the proceedings in sumptuously vibrant colors that both breathe life into the staid country manor milieu as well as comment on the sexual underpinnings of Becky's calculated machinations.
Her film, from its glittering set design to its heroines' heaving bosoms, is enticingly opulent.
The consequence of such narrative imbalance is that the film becomes an awkward—and slightly unfaithful—period piece about one pretty woman's uplifting elevation from poverty to prominence.
