Look What I Found In My Brain!: Why it's a bad idea to pay a vanity press to publish your writing
Vanity publishers will publish anything if the author has the money, be it a family history to distribute to relatives, a guide for classes, or a volume of badly-written poetry.
With a vanity press, there's no editor making an informed decision as to whether or not the manuscript in question is good, bad, or indifferent.
Vanity presses engage in a lot of borderline or outright scamming; they ensure their own profits, and the clauses in their contracts often create a situation where the author becomes their best customer.

 Vanity or Subsidy Publishers
Reviewers and bookstores know who the vanity press scammers are and will have little, if anything, to do with them.
As for the inventory, in the worst case, the vanity/subsidy press, after the specified length of the contract, will tell the author that the books are not selling and therefore will be destroyed--unless the author buys them.
When "vanity" presses became identified with publishing scams, they changed their identity to "subsidy" publishers.

The vanity press release is an excellent way to do that, especially when you use it as a reason to send a personalized note to your key contacts to show you’re thinking of them.
The national news media may ignore your press releases, but chances are your local newspaper won’t, especially if your company is based in a small or mid-size media market.

Without the vanity posse, scores of vital newspapers and magazines might fold tomorrow, reducing the size of the inner sanctum, which would be a very bad thing for us.
Typical vanity moguls are confident beasts but most wear their publications as emblems of their insecurities.
But in most cases, the vanity mogul's life cycle is every bit as predictable as that of a butterfly.

PublishAmerica claims they are not a vanity press, but the authors made their point when the print-on-demand (POD) publisher accepted the book and sent a publishing contract.

The writers wanted to see where PublishAmerica puts its own "quality bar."   Vanity press - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A vanity press is distinguished from a small press publisher in that the small press acts as its larger cousins do, performing the traditional roles of editorial selection, binding and review, and marketing at its own expense, rather than at the expense of the author.
Vanity presses do offer more independence for the author than does the mainstream publishing industry; however, their fees are often higher than the fees normally charged for similar printing services, and sometimes restrictive contracts are required.
The term “vanity press” is generally derogatory, and is often used to imply that an author using such a service is only publishing out of vanity, and that his or her work could not be commercially successful.

Lars Eighner's Homepage Writers' Workshop FAQ: Q. What is the difference between vanity publishing and self-publishing?
Although it would seem that using a vanity press would be easier, the truth is vanity presses cannot do some of the harder tasks any better than you can--and the services you could perform for yourself are grossly overpriced when done by the vanity press.
The vanity press has no advantages, and that they are a vanity press will be enough to cause most critics and bookstores to send their review copies and catalogues directly to the circular file.
But as it would take as much work and luck to succeed with a vanity press, self-publishing is the better choice for someone who can't get published by conventional means and insists on risking his or her own money.

Small press - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Small press is a term often used to describe publishers who typically specialize in genre fiction or limited-edition books or magazines.
It should not be confused with "vanity press", which usually implies payment by authors to publish.
With a small press, the publisher is much more likely to be motivated by the desire to make writing of limited immediate commercial value available through formal publication.

The last time that Vantage Press, the vanity publisher whose name is synonymous with flagging fiction and unmemorable memoirs, had a bestseller was three years ago.
In a sense, Vantage is betting the house on the idea that frustrated authors who can't get a book deal with a major--or minor--publisher will pay them ten grand or so for the cachet of being able to hold an actual hardcover book in their hands, as opposed to the virtual properties of the net.
One thing, however, that vanity presses and the net have in common is quality.

 What Is the Vanity Press?
University presses are often "subsidy publishers." Since their primary function is not to make a profit, many of their books are subsidized – sometimes by the university itself, sometimes by organizations, sometimes by authors.
Whether fairly or not, a reviewer will almost certainly ignore a book with the name of a well-known vanity house on the spine, but he just might take notice of a self-published book or one from a small press that is not a vanity house.
Bookstores never stock vanity press publications (except, perhaps, in the immediate community where the author may be well known).

 AuthorsLawyer.com: Literary Scams: Printing Costs
A vanity press preys on the vanity of the authors—their opinions that their works are unjustly neglected by the publishing industry.
This does not mean that vanity presses are inherently evil; a vanity press may be appropriate for some types of projects, such as family histories with extremely limited audiences.
Don't allow the name of the press to fool you; a "vanity press" is to a "subsidy publisher" as a "garbage collector" is to a "sanitation engineer." Remember, too, that "POD" is a printing technology, not a business model.

The entertainment press and Hollywood have more of a symbiotic relationship than the news media do with many other businesses — magazines and other news organizations compete for access to the studios’ biggest stars, and also depend on the studios for advertising.

 Vanity publisher - LISWiki
A vanity publisher (also known as a subsidy press, vanity press, or self-publisher) is a publishing house that specializes in producing books entirely at the author's risk and expense.
These presses typically publish around 300 to 600 titles a year, and, although the occasional title may receive critical acclaim or market success, they are generally considered to occupy a place at the margins of the publishing world (Dilevko and Dali 2006, 209).
The authors conclude with a reminder to librarians that although stigmas surrounding vanity presses persist today and often for good reason, in a publishing world dominated by conglomerates, “self-publishers may be one of the last frontiers of true independent publishing” (Dilevko and Dali 2006, 233).
