Vapor Trails - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vapor Trails is the seventeenth studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush, released in 2002 (see 2002 in music).
The release of Vapor Trails marked the first studio album for the band in six years (since Test for Echo in 1996).
Long known for purposeful stylistic changes that defined individual albums as well as delineated the larger-scale phases of their recording career, Vapor Trails brought a shift in many fundamental aspects of the Rush sound as it had evolved over the years.

 Rush: Vapor Trails (2002): Reviews
Vapor Trails is a great, straight-forward hard rock album from a band that actually seems to be getting better as it ages.
Vapor Trails combines the cartoonish familiarity of Geddy Lee's helium-tinged vocals and [Neil] Peart's hyperkinetic drumming with the tuneful, concise writing they've favored since 1989's Presto.
Vapor Trails is Rush's most focused effort in many years, thanks to a renewed emphasis on songwriting.

 RUSH: Vapor Trails
Well, let me tell you having listened to 'Vapor Trails' quite a few times now, one thing I can tell you is that this album gets better with every listen and 'Vapor Trails' rocks, in fact it rocks harder than anything Rush has done in the past 20 years.
It is also apparent from listening to 'Vapor Trails' that Rush have concentrated more on their actual songwriting this time, you won't find any keyboards or guitar solo's, but you will find as I have already mentioned tracks that will rock yer socks off.
'Vapor Trail', this is the title track and has quite a strong catchy melody, a little mellower than most of the tracks on this album.

You have to discern whether the trail came from a hot lead, a dead lead, where the source of the data is, where it was heading, and what message the data contains.

Future intel operations have to be able to pick up the trail from the inception, which is how and why the capture of Khan in Pakistan is a big deal (regardless of whether the arrest and public disclosure of that fact), because the US was able to obtain the origin point for the vapor trails.

The songs on Vapor Trails may not be as instant or accessible as those on their previous albums, but the Canadian trio is definitely playing harder and bolder than they have in years.
Vapor Trails, in nearly every respect, is a classic.
I just can't believe how awful "Vapor Trails" is. The sound quality is just plain bad, the playing lacks spark, the arrangements seem very forced and the songs aren't good.

Rush's Vapor Trails album-recording the new Vapor Trails CD
All doubts were cast aside once the power trio began working in their traditional way: Lee and guitarist Alex Liefson jamming until melodies emerged, Peart writing lyrics (some of which reflect his personal trials), and then the threesome uniting to flesh out the tunes.
Vapor Trails is the first Rush album in a long time not to feature keyboards prominently: Liefson simply would not allow Lee to use his synths, a fact they both amiably joke about as they relax in Atlantic Records' New York offices.
Vapor Trails was mixed by David Leonard at Metalworks in Mississauga, Ontario, and mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk in New York.

VAPOR TRAILS finds prog-rock veterans Rush breaking the longest hiatus (six years, in part due to personal tragedies suffered by drummer/lyricist Neil Peart) in the band's 30-year history.
Quite notable on VAPOR TRAILS is bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee's singing, which find him soaring confidently in the upper part of his range, especially on "Ghost Rider" and "Nocturne." This brings back memories of the early days, as the '90s often found Lee confining himself to his midrange.
As he sings on "Peaceable Kingdom," the time is now again for Rush; VAPOR TRAILS boasts a set of stirring songs with the potential to become instant Rush classics.

All of their previous albums are evidence of this and vapor tails is no exception, retaining their "delightful complexity" that sets them apart from most of the hum drum garbage of today's corporate rock music.
Vapor Trails is perhaps one of their darkest and technically complex albums yet.
In short, if you enjoy rush as three talented individuals who challenge themselves, as they do the listener, you will not be disappointed with this album, or any of their previous albums for that matter.

Rush Vapor Trails CD review on AudioRevolution.com
Rush released a live album as a "thank you" to their fans and most believed that it might possibly be the end of the group.
My initial impression after first listening to Vapor Trails was that Rush has finally ditched the highly structured song formats and have gone to a more spontaneous "play what you feel" method of songwriting.
All of the performances on Vapor Trails are much more about the "feeling" of the music than the actual notes themselves.

Rush: Vapor Trails [2002] Shaking Through.net: Music: Review
Born of personal tragedy (drummer and lyricist Neil Peart lost both his wife and daughter in the years since 1996's Test for Echo), Vapor Trails is a striking song cycle wrapped around themes of looking back and moving forward, and is easily the most personal album of the band's long career.
That's not to say that Vapor Trails is a musically leaden affair, although its charms do take a few listens to comfortably unspool.
But the fact that Trails exists at all is, in the end, a "little victory" that does yield honest (if somewhat recalcitrant) rewards.

For this album “Vapour Trails” the band equally decided to keep out most, if not all keyboards and lengthy guitar solos.
Considering the fact that these two elements were often the main reason to buy a Rush album, it’s understandable that many fans find it difficult to get adjusted to this new sound.

After drummer Neil Peart's much-publicized tragic turn of events in his private life not long after Rush's 1996 release Test for Echo (the death of both his teenaged daughter and wife less than a year apart), the group's future was understandably cast into doubt.
Slowly but surely, however, the band regained their footing and issued their 17th studio album in 2002, Vapor Trails.
For Rush's most recent release, Vapor Trails was a return to the roots for the band.

On "Vapor Trails," the stalwart Canadian power trio Rush returns from a six-year studio absence, sniffs the wind and abandons the prog-rock jams of its last studio album, Test for Echo, for a harder, Staind-friendly approach.
Vapor Trails is also Rush's most focused effort in many years, thanks to a renewed emphasis on songwriting.
The lyrics of drummer Neil Peart, who lost a daughter in a car accident and then his wife to cancer, have become less abstract and much more personal.

Rush "Vapor Trails" by Sam Pryor
After the devastating demise of drummer Neil Peart's family and Rush's eventual five year hiatus from show biz, the power progressive rock trio return with Vapor Trails, an album which is more melodically streamlined and butt kicking than a band of graying geezers has to a right to release.
While still trumpeting Peart's harebrained lyrics ("If culture is the curse of the thinking class") and Geddy Lee's cat-ripped-my-tongue vocals, Vapor Trails also reflects Rush's chameleon-like talent to float with the changes, decade by decade.
To this pared-down palette (no synths!) Rush also bring a catchy melodicism, making "Ceiling Unlimited," "Vapor Trail," and "How It Is" lighters-aloft anthems for arena rockers everywhere.

A contrail, also known as a condensation trail, is a cirrus-like trail of condensed vapor (often resembling the tail of a kite) that is produced by jet aircraft flying at high altitudes.
Contrails form through the injection of water vapor into the atmosphere by exhaust fumes from a jet engine.
For a contrail to remain in tact for a long period of time, the air must have high a relative humidity and light winds.

It’s a far cry from the crisp early 80s sound of songs like “Tom Sawyer.” The major difference on the new record is that for the most part the band has forsaken keyboards in favor of layering Lifeson’s guitars.
The album’s title track returns to the mystical, nature-oriented themes that were the band’s bread and butter throughout much of their early prog-rock efforts.
But for the most part on Vapor Trails, Rush isn’t interested in nostalgia and they sound nothing like rock dinosaurs.
