Tamar (1160-1213), from the House of Bagrationi, was Queen of the Kingdom of Georgia from 1184 to 1213.
Tamar’s frescos are preserved in the Monasteries of Gelati, Vardzia, Betania and Kintsvisi.

Cave City of Vardzia (Georgian ვარძია) is a hidden monastery dug into the side of the Erusheli mountain in south Georgia near Aspindza.
Persians commanded by Shah-Tamaz raided the monastery in 1551, capturing all important icons and effectively ending the life of the monastery.
In the modern days Vardzia is a major tourist attraction in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia.

A rock-cut monastic complex Vardzia is located in South Georgia on the left bank of the Mtkvari-River.
It was hewn-out in Erusheti Mountain in the XII-XIII centuries (though the earliest group of the caves is ascribed to the X century) and extends half a kilometer into the heart of the mountain.
It is famous for being one of the most important historical monuments of the X century A.D. It is located 12 km from Akhalkalaki, the regional administrative-town, on the mountain slopes.

However, as queen, Tamar oversaw Vardzia’s completion, but under her supervision, the caves would serve a different purpose: she intended it not as a military town, as had been originally designed, but as a huge fortified monastery.
As for the complex of Vardzia, autumn is the best time to visit, as weather can be too hot during summer, while in winter the firms have to refuse tourists the tour due to the poor condition of some sections of the road leading to the complex.
An earthquake at the end of the 13th Century destroyed the front of the complex, while later in the 14th Century the monastery was brought to ruin by Mongols and was plundered and destroyed by Persians and Turks in the 16th Century.

It's a very small place with only a few houses, but interesting because it has hot springs and a place to spend the night when it is too cold to camp in Vardzia.
Ask for the Sauna or Banja and you will be taken to a family house a bit away from the other houses.

The monastery consisted of over six thousand apartments created as protection from Mongols into the hidden thirteen floors high complex.

When my parents and brother visited in May, one of the trips we took was out to Vardzia.
Located in a valley with steep walls, this fortress is located on a spike of rock that rises out of the valley floor.
Climbing it was challenging for me-- only four of us in the group did so.
