  Mazda6Tech - Exploring Mazda's Intake Technology
The variable intake timing gained 10% more torque across more the lower half of the rev range until the VVT reaches full retard at 6000rpm (which is where the blue line meets the red line).
The resin intake manifold that Mazda used to create their 2.3l engine has a valve that changes the volume of the intake runner pipes, changing the resonance frequency of the intake inertial charge.
Intake charge speed is less of an issue on valves that do not open very much, but recall that Mazda's VVT does not vary valve lift.

Unthrottled engine operation with a heated air cycle - Patent 5996560
Variable control of both the intake and exhaust events is used to assure that the engine cylinder is partially filled with exhaust gas at light loads with only the remaining portion of the cylinder volume available for the intake air.
In this case, mixing the intake air with substantial amounts of exhaust gas as proposed by Pischinger increases the mean temperature of the gas in the cylinder and, therefore, avoids a reduction in compression ratio and low compression end temperature, which is normally associated with late or early intake valve closing.
When variable early intake valve closing is applied during the intake stroke, the compression end temperature is still reduced because, subsequent to the closing during the later part of the intake stroke, the cylinder charge is subject to adiabatic expansion.

Intake and exhaust valve springs are stiffer by 27 percent and 19 percent, respectively, compared with the Zetec I-4’s.
The intake camshaft is equipped with an electro-mechanical control mechanism, which allows the cam’s maximum opening point, relative to crankshaft degrees, to be varied between 85 and 145 degrees after top-dead-center on the intake stroke.
The variability is dependent on engine speed and load, and is accomplished by changing oil pressure on either side of a piston in a helix between the cam and its drive pulley.

The fully variable intake manifold is the first system in the world able to adjust the length of the manifolds infinitely to engine speed by way of a separate adjustment mechanism.
Intake air from inside the drum is able to enter the intake manifold through a recess in the rotor ring, the effective length of the intake manifold changing with the position of this opening.
On account of this configuration, manifold length is shortest when the intake funnel connects directly to the intake duct, rotation of the ring around its central axis varying the length of the intake duct from 231 mm (9.1") to 673 mm (26.5").

The intake manifold is a buffer between the engine and the mandatory restrictor.
When the intake valve shuts abruptly, the air in the runner continues to move down the runner, creating a high-pressure area on top of the intake valve.
While the occurrence of these resonances can be predicted with a good deal of accuracy, the actual size of the peaks in terms of the highest torque attained and the increase in area under the torque curve are very difficult to predict as is the effect of plenum volume on the resonance peaks.

 The WRX engine
While we might want to say this is because of the variable valve timing, in fact the presence of variable valve timing and the improved drivability is directly attributable to the difference in the fuel the engine is being fed and also the effects of the stringent emissions and fuel economy regulations in the US.
A variable intake cam timing engine can use a bit more intake/exhaust valve overlap in the low rpm regions for better off boost throttle response and then close down the overlap and at the same time extend intake closing time, which lets the cylinder fill better for more power.
I would have hoped Subaru would have used variable valve timing to help achieve emissions and mileage goals, but motors tend generally to detonate in the 3000-4000 rpm region where the cylinder pressures are highest and variable valve timing does no really help this problem.

Adoption programs can also increase intake by increasing the population of animals that may later be relinquished, although the rates of animals returned to shelters suggests that this number is probably not very large.
Intake rates and spay/neuter rates will both be high or low based on the rate of animal ownership/guardianship in the population.
Adding other relevant variables might also help to explain the percent of animals that are relinquished or lost to the street outside of the impact of spay/neuter procedures, thus further isolating the effect of spay/neuter procedures.

"Twinport", Opel plans to reduce the fuel consumption of small gasoline engines
With an innovative variable intake control system called "Twinport", Opel plans to reduce the fuel consumption of small gasoline engines (up to a maximum size of 1.6 liters) by as much as six percent.
This is precisely what Opel's engineers have achieved with their variable intake control system: at partial load one of the two intake ports to each cylinder of the four-valve engine is partly blanked off by closing a throttle just before the mixture reaches the intake valve.
For successful use of the shutdown principle, the intake ports and the mixture formation process before and after entering the cylinders had to be optimized.

Rheinmetall AG - Rheinmetall's tradition of automotive excellence: The variable intake manifold saves the plant in ...
In the Audi 100 "2.8E" and "Quattro" models, this variable intake manifold made of gray cast iron was pre-assembled as a module for the very first time, complete with throttle body, exhaust gas recirculation and idle speed adjustment, tested and delivered ready for installation.
The intake manifold is in fact only one of the products that have ensured the survival of the Neuss-based automotive company since 1990, but it has symbolic value: the rescue of the Nettetal plant is closely associated with the new development of the variable intake manifold.
A variable intake manifold from Nettetal was built into the four-wheel drive Audi 100 for the first time—thus opening a new chapter in Kolbenschmidt Pierburg AG's success story, which over the whole Rheinmetall-Automotive range has lasted to this day, up to and including the current Audi V 8.

 New-Generation 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLK Convertible Arrives
However, the debut of the 2005 SLK coupe roadster also marks the arrival of a new high-tech engine family from Mercedes-Benz, one which is characterized by four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust valves.
Variable intake and exhaust valve timing requires separate camshafts for the intake and exhaust, so the new SLK powerplant represents the first time Mercedes-Benz has used double-overhead camshaft technology on their V6 engines.
While the variable valve timing system gets a lot of credit for the engine's unusually broad torque curve, a two-stage intake manifold plays a key role as well.
