		Install some sort of "stop" that prevents the variac from turning far enough to reach the burned windings.
		Depending on how many windings are burned, you may still be able to get 125V or 130V, or whatever, out of the unit, this would be the easiest approach if not too many windings are burned.
		Variacs can handle considerably more than their rated current for short periods.

		Said variac has a smaller core, and doesn't have enough minimum inductance to limit current at 60 Hz.
		Just a thought, unless mounted in an aircraft I can see no practical use for a 400Hz variable autotransformer (Variac is a trade name) except as an anchor for a small watercraft or if it's a small one you can unsolder one end of the winding and use it as a yo-yo.

	Fun with a BIG laser....
		I also had a huge dual-ganged variac (which coincidentally was originally used to control the intensity of two halogen lamps in a very old YAG laser), and four 3300uF 400V electrolytics I bought very cheap from a radio rally (hamfest).
		Loud hum from variac, lights dimming slightly, and that familiar smell of 'hot electrics' from the variac.....
		The smell of Hot Variac was getting pretty strong by now, so I switched off to let things cool off a bit, and replaced the mirror retaining cap.

		Since a Variac is an exposed transformer, by hooking it up incorrectly you could get the hot of the AC line on the chassis of the amp and electrocute your self.
		But it seems that in the case of the Variac model (as well as some of the other models) I want to turn it up more, that it doesnt quite have the distortion I have heard before.
		When I crank up the Variac model to 10 it sounds like it's Van Halen on 7 instead of 11, if you know what I mean.

		A variac can take a 100 watt Marshall plexi down to 5 watts, when you pull 2 tubes and run the variac at 55 volts.
		A variac is also good for amps that are meant for 105 or 110 volts, rather than 130 volts; 130 would damage the amp.

		I remove the tubes and plug the unit into my Variac and bring the power up while monitoring the AC voltages coming out of the power transformer.

		That said, Line 6's Plexi Variac model IS a very nice one and I've heard some very convincing EVH PodXT tones based on both this and a number of other amp models, including models of a number of amps which EVH was never reported/reputed to have used.
		Currently the Podxt plexi variac model is still the closest digital approximation of that sound, imo.
		The amp is biased at 40-41ma at idle and i also use a Staco Variac set to around 90 volts to get the volume even lower.

		I personally have not totally killed a variac but I did pay attention to some post a year or two back regarding variacs vs. welders.
		Ed Wingate was good enough to share some experiences he had with variacs.
		This is exactly why I've have been stressing in some of the ballasting posts to "not" push the ballast variac.
