  Lindëfirion: History of Khand
Variag cities are large and orderly, mostly built of bricks.
While all positions of power are held by the variag warrior caste, inferior and menial labour is largely on the shoulders of the subject peoples: haradrim, nûriads and nûrniags.
It is strictly confined to variags themselves; ethnical minorities and slaves are forcibly excluded as heathens.

Khand   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Tolkien's universe of Middle-earth, Khand was the name of a land which lay to the south-east of Mordor and to the east of Near Harad.
Khand was under the influence of Mordor and supplied it with horses, and twice came into the history of Gondor: first in the year 1944 of the Third Age when the Variags together with the Wainriders attacked Gondor, and later during the War of the Ring when they fought and died on the Pelennor Fields.
While this is not directly said in the literature, it is probable that Khand gradually fell under the control of Gondor during the Fourth Age and was hostile to it no longer.

However the Wainriders struck back in 1944, allying themselves with the Haradrim of Near Harad and the Variags of Khand.
They managed to kill king Ondoher and all his heirs, but instead of riding on to Minas Anor and taking the city, they paused to celebrate.
The Variags (in the real world, this is another name for the Varangians) were from Khand, and they first appeared in the West in 1944 of the Third Age, fighting alongside the Wainriders.

The name Variags appears out of nothing in one of the drafts for LOTR, with no preceding forms or variants (a rarity with JRRT).
Since Variags are described as a group of mercenaries who fought on horse-back, it is quite possible that Tolkien chose the name because it fit the image he wanted to recall for this people.
Remember that we have to assume that all names in LOTR which are not Sindarin or Quenya are English translations of Westron terms.
