Variation (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Variation form, or theme and variation, is a musical form where a theme is repeated in altered form or accompanied in a different manner.
Mozart favored a particular pattern in his variations: the penultimate variation is in slow tempo, often acting as a kind of extra slow movement in a multi-movement work; and the final variation is fast and in bravura style.
Variation sets that listeners often consider to be among Beethoven's most profound musical utterances occur in several of his late works, such as slow movement of his String quartet Op.

Two famous variation sets from the Baroque era, both for harpsichord, are George Frideric Handel's "Harmonious Blacksmith" set, and Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, which together with Beethoven's late variations is widely considered to represent the pinnacle of the form.
Joseph Haydn specialized in sets of double variations, in which two related themes, usually minor and major, are presented and then varied in alternation; one example is the slow movement of his Symphony #103, the "Drumroll".
Some of Brahms's variation sets rely on themes by older composers, for example the variations for orchestra on a theme (thought in Brahms's time to be) by Haydn and the variations for piano on a theme by Handel.

 Elegant Variation. Fowler, H. W. 1908. The King's English
The use of pronouns is itself a form of variation, designed to avoid ungainly repetition; and we are only going one step further when, instead of either the original noun or the pronoun, we use some new equivalent.
Variation of this kind is often necessary in practice; so often, that it should never be admitted except when it is necessary.
When the choice lies between monotonous repetition on the one hand and clumsy variation on the other, it may fairly be laid down that of two undesirable alternatives the natural is to be preferred to the artificial.

Variations in Variation and Selection: - Title
To restrict variation and selection forms of explanation to external selection is to impose a theoretical constraint to something that is a property of the observer's frame of analysis, not a property of the phenomena per se.
Variations and selections, then, are characteristics of phenomena that are logically distinguishable from other characteristics such as historicity, especially historicity in all its complex richness in the biological realm of reproduction, phenotypes and genotypes, interactors and replicators, and so on.
Variation and selection forms of explanation are valid and of broad scope when differentiated from such issues as historicity with which they are associated in biological evolution, the home domain of discovery of variation and selection forms of explanation.

By contrast to sectional variation form, in which a self-contained theme (almost always in binary form) is repeatedly presented in varied form, continuous variation form is created by repeated variation of a pattern that is not self-contained.
Continuous variation form was popular in the Baroque period, but it is still popular today -- every Blues performance and Jazz improvisation over Blues changes is a kind of continuous variation form.

In this first full-scale examination of the theme-and-variations form in the Classical era, Elaine Sisman demonstrates persuasively that it was Haydn's prophetic innovations - placing the variation in every position of a multi-movement cycle, broadening its array of theme types, and transforming its larger shape - that truly created the Classical variation.
She elucidates the concept and technique of variation, traces Haydn's development and use of the form in symphonies, chamber music, and keyboard works, and then shows how Mozart and Beethoven in their individual ways built on his contributions.
Her book offers a revaluation of the nature of the variation form and a new approach to the music of Haydn.

In his early years, this was the ‘classical’ form that he favoured most; and so, in one sense, the series of orchestral Variations is the forerunner of the later long line of symphonies.
The main responsibility for melodic variation is carried here by oboes, cor anglais and bassoons; later it is the full brass that develop the Theme proper, against a stream of ‘imitations’ from woodwind and strings over long-held pedal-points in timpani and basses.
This ‘form’ proves not to be that of the Baroque French or German Overture, however - Brian obviously had in mind the 19th century Concert Overture, for this final variation proves to be a fully developed sonata-form.

Brahms was also a prolific composer in the theme and variation form, having notably composed the Variations and Fugue on a theme by Händel, Paganini Variations, and Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, along with other lesser known sets of variations.
Brahms's affection for the Classical period may also be reflected in his choice of genres: he favored the Classical forms of the sonata, symphony, and concerto, and frequently composed movements in sonata form.
Brahms was almost certainly influenced by the technological development of the piano, which reached essentially its modern form during his lifetime.
