  MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Varicose veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, painful superficial veins resulting from poorly functioning valves.
Surgery such as vein stripping and ligation (removal of the varicose vein), or sclerotherapy of veins (injecting with a solution that causes scarring, which closes the vein) may be recommended.
Vein stripping is a very extensive procedure, and it is usually reserved for patients who are experiencing a lot of pain or who have skin ulcers.

Varicose veins may sometimes be an important pathway for venous return, as when they provide a bypass pathway for venous return in patients with acute blockage of the deep venous system from any cause.
Varicose veins of pregnancy most often are caused by hormonal changes that render vein walls and the valves themselves more pliable, but the sudden appearance of new dilated varicosities during pregnancy still warrants a full evaluation because of the possibility that these may be new bypass pathways related to acute DVT.
The most important of these are the posteromedial and anterolateral thigh veins, found at the level of the mid thigh, and the anterior and posterior accessory saphenous veins at the level of the canal of Hunter in the upper thigh, where a perforating vein often connects the GSV to the femoral vein.

There are several types of veins that are often referred to as ``varicosities." These include telangiectasias (``spider veins"), reticular veins (``blue veins") and the prominent, bulging varicose veins.
Reappearance of varicosities is not uncommon as the underlying condition that causes the spider veins has not been altered by sclerotherapy or laser treatments.

Varicose Veins & Spider Veins Treatment
Veins in the subcutaneous layer of fat and outside the muscle compartment of the legs have little support and as an increased blood volume flows into them, they balloon up and begin to function more like reservoirs than conduits.
The most obvious characteristic of varicose veins, other than their larger size and what distinguishes them from spider veins, is their commonly colorless bulging through the skin.
All such veins are abnormal and their elimination with treatment improves the general circulation by assuring that blood flows only in normal, healthy deeper lying veins.
