Sure there is a lot of variability in gulls, particularly when they are young, but as adults the variability shown by most taxa is not nearly as much as that shown by Kumlien's Gull.
Regarding whether classical clinal variation makes _thayer_ and _kumlieni_ one species, in such a case we couldn't separate the birds into diagnosable groups so we would be forced to treat them all as one species (both phylogenetic species and biological species).
I have never seen any Varied Thrush lacking a breast band, this is really an odd trait no matter what age or sex you consider the bird to be.

I often think of these as the "Winter Robins", since they bear a general resemblance to Robins and largely take their place here during the winter months, probably mostly birds spending summers in the Cascades.
While thrushes are mainly ground-feeders, I have seen them take feeder food on occasion.
In 1998, they were here only for a few weeks after the season's major snowstorm, although there were the most individuals I had ever seen here at one time (six.) I haven't seen more than one at a time during 1999, but they've been here much more often.
