Plant Delights Nursery -- Variegated Plants
Variegated plants suffer from the outdated belief that all plants are supposed to be green.
Variegation in plants is defined as the normal green portion of the plant leaf being replaced by white, cream, yellow, or occasionally other colors, which may be in the form of blotches or stripes.
The variegations can occur on the edge of the leaves (marginate variegation), or in the center of the leaf (medio variegation.) Variegated plants which have neat regular leaf margins of white or gold and tend to be the most accepted by gardeners.

 A variegated kaleidoscope | csmonitor.com
Variegated means "having marks, stripes, or blotches of some color other than the basic background color, in plants that are green." Variegated plants are rarely considered a group unto themselves.
Variegated foliage encompasses crimson, purple, orange, red, yellow, pink, apricot, yellow, mauve, and the varying shades and tints of green.
Also, the variegations may be reversed; thus, the green becomes the edging with the contrasting hue as the main leaf color.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden: Variegated Species—Peculiar Plants and the People Wo Love Them
Variegated plants don't quite fit Keats' romantic vision in "Ode to a Nightingale" of a "melodious plot of beechen green." Indeed, for some gardeners, variegated plants are garish anomalies better suited to star in an episode of "The Twilight Zone" than in any part of the yard.
Consequently, as a general rule, variegated plants are neither as hardy as their all-green counterparts—nor as impressive in the flower department.
Variegated plants are especially useful for adding counterpoint to problematic areas of shade.

Variegation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Variegation is the appearance of differently coloured zones in the leaves, and sometimes the stems, of plants.
Because the variegation is due to the presence of two kinds of plant tissue, propagating the plant must be by a vegetative method of propagation that preserves both types of tissue in relation to each other.
Some variegation is due to visual effects due to reflection of light from the leaf surface.

 Reversion of variegated foliage
Variegated trees and shrubs usually originate from naturally occurring mutations or sports.
To retain the variegated feature, these plants are propagated vegetatively such as from cuttings or layering.
As they are more vigorous than variegated ones, they will finally overtake the variegated shoots in size and vigour, so it is advisable to remove them as soon as they are noticed.

We spotted variegated hollies, wild mahonia, bergenia, vinca and cotoneaster growing freely between the markers, and as we made our way up and down the fragrant paths, pausing over the monuments to the dead that nestled, neglected, in the tousled undergrowth, we felt like explorers in a haunted jungle.
But as no one was being hurt, you were right to sit quietly and marvel at the variegated -- and sometimes idiotic -- beliefs of humanity.

Like most variegated plants, the striped iris are grown for their foliage rather than for their flowers - which is a good thing in the case of the exquisite though unreasonably rare Iris foetidissima 'Variegata', since its pale mauve flowers are unlikely to attract attention.
In the category, Variegated Iris with Most Dramatic Flower, the winner is Iris laevigata 'Variegata', familiarly known (in which circles I know not) as "variegated rabbit ears." Midnight-purple flowers jump out from a three- to five-foot plant known for its particularly clean variegation.
The variegated yellow flag is virescent (meaning that its leaves revert to green by summer), but that should not dissuade you from including it in your pond for its overall exuberance and reliable spring show.
