On 11 July 1973, Varig Flight 820, scheduled to fly from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, made a forced landing at a field nearby the French airport of Orly.
A fire aboard the plane and a crash at the final part of the landing was the cause of the casualties: 123 deaths and 11 survivors (10 crew, 1 passenger).
Only one passenger survived, while the major part of the crew left the plane by the emergency exit at the top of the cockpit.

I was stranded in Peru recently because Varig decided to cancel all their flights and had to spend 4 nights without sleep travelling across the country to arrange new flights as Varig customer services kept hanging up and refused to tell us what was happening.
Varig has to be one of the worst airlines I have ever flow, if not the absolute worst.
VARIG used to be a great airline some 10 years ago, but a series of chaotic administrations lead this company to what we see today: old, dirty airplanes with no entertainment, no punctuality, no friendly staff.

 Varig Announces Rescue Plan
Brazilian airline Varig unveiled plans on Monday to fire 13 percent of its 12,000 employees and form a new company by the end of 2006 to avoid bankruptcy.
Meanwhile, Varig hopes to break even this year with revenues matching expenditures thanks to operating improvements including the cancellation of unprofitable flights and an increased number of flights that are bringing money into its coffers, said Varig President Omar da Cunha.
Under the plan, Varig plans to reactivate 14 aircraft now idled due to a lack of funds and renew half of its fleet in the next two years when the current leases expire.
