Topic: Varna ashram

Varnas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sanskrit term varna is derived from the root vrn meaning "to choose (from a group)." This is contrary to the assumption that 'varna' denotes color and hence signifies qualities of someone, just as Shaguna Brahman means "with qualities." In the context of social hierarchies, it means "arrangement".
Varna (Class) (वर्ण From Sanskrit, literally "arrangement") is a supposed unification of all the Hindu sub-castes or jatis into either four groups: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra, or into one of several varna-sankaras वर्ण संकर.
The term Varna is not associated with Brahmins or Kshatriyas in the Rig Veda, and the term Varna does not occur in the Purusha Sukta.

Broadly understood, South Africa during the era of apartheid, the practice of slavery in the antebelum south of the United States through the Civil Rights movement, colonial Latin America under Spanish and Portuguese rule, and the British occupation of India before its independence were all caste-based societies.
In the Manusmriti it is asserted that there are only four varnas, which leads one to the conclusion that the formation of the outcaste groups may have been a consequence of the Buddhist injunction against professions dealing with animal-killing.
Thus, the varnas were a good way of helping people who had no chance of being warriors or priests, due to their upbringing or native intelligence/ability, to live happily within their life and feel good about attaining God through proper adherence to their own dharma (overall duties).

It is in keeping with varna dharma that sons are expected to follow the occupation of their father, as that is the occupation that was chosen prior to birth.
The varna dharma system--despite its widespread discrimination against harijans, and the abuse of social status by higher castes--ensures a high standard of craftsmanship, a sense of community belonging, family integrity and religio-cultural continuity.
