Built in 1926, Varsity Arena is home ice for the men's and women's Varsity Blues hockey teams, the Blues figure skating program and the community based University Skating Club.
With a seating capacity for hockey of 4,116, the versatile arena has attracted such diverse activities as boxing and wrestling matches, one of the world's largest book sales, concerts and major "teach-ins" during the protest years of the late sixties.
Varsity spectators have only a short walk from the Bedford exit at the St. George subway station.

The two giant rainbow triangles that have graced the surface of the ice at Varsity Arena played host to about 100 people at a family skate Friday evening, while the U of T men's hockey team was on the road.
Addario says the rainbow triangles on the ice at Varsity Arena are just one example of U of T's commitment, although the arena itself is slated for destruction in just a few months to make room for the new athletic complex being built on the site underneath Varsity Stadium.
The triangles on the arena's ice were painted courtesy of the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, for a gay hockey tournament that happened a few weeks ago.

Varsity won both the Senior and Intermediate titles while the Juniors, coached for the first time by Conn Smythe, reached the finals in the O.H.A. In the Interfaculty there were seventeen teams entered, Senior Dents winning the Jennings Cup.
During the summer of 1926 the Varsity Arena had been built, thanks to a generous loan from the Board of Governors, and by December the ice was ready.
While the Varsity Grads were entered in the O.H.A. and winning the John Ross Robertson and Allan Cups, the Varsity team won the Senior Intercollegiate Championship under the coaching of L. (Mike) Pearson in 1927 and again in 1928.

The proposed Varsity Centre will provide activity space for U of T students as well as the fans of intercollegiate sport in a 5,000-seat stadium with an artificial playing surface and an eight-lane 400 metre running track.
Plans call for the Varsity Centre to be the active centrepiece for a neighbourhood of four student residences that will wrap around the field on two sides.
As Steve Murphy, captain of the Varsity Blues men's hockey team, says, "The state of a university's athletic facility is a big part of a student's choice of which school to attend.

For most of the twentieth century Varsity Blues teams have played and practiced on the historic field of Varsity Stadium and the ice at Varsity Arena, but the facilities available to the Varsity Blues are even more extensive and include the University of Toronto Athletic and Physical Education Centre, known as the AC.
The AC includes an outstanding Field House, including a 200-m indoor track surrounding four multipurpose courts; an Olympic size pool and a 25-yd pool; a basketball and volleyball court with seating capacity for 800 and a new Strength and Conditioning Centre.
Varsity Blues teams practice and play at the Athletic Centre, Varsity Arena, Varsity Stadium and Back Campus.

Subsequent phases that are proposed will include a bubble-like air-supported structure installed over the playing field in winter months, a three- or four-storey building at the south end of the site to accommodate indoor training, research, teaching and support spaces, and renovations to Varsity Arena.

U of T came to life early in the second stanza, and for the first time in the game had the Golden Hawks on their heels.

 Positive Space Campaign Takes Centre Ice at Varsity Arena
The Campaign for Positive Space will take centre ice at Varsity Arena this week as it relaunches its poster and sticker campaign to create a campus free of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Two inverted triangles sporting the six colours of the rainbow will be painted in diagonally opposite corners of the centre ice area on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The positive space symbols will remain in the centre ice area for all events during the month of October, including intercollegiate and intramural games and Friendship 98, the worlds largest gay hockey tournament.

TORONTO  At Varsity Arena, Liz Chiasson scored her second goal of the afternoon with just 3:14 remaining to lift the Queen's Golden Gaels to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the nation's eighth-ranked Brock Badgers, earning Queen's the bronze medal at the 2005 OUA Women's Hockey Championship.
Chiasson (Kingston, Ont.), who became the OUA's all-time leading scorer this season, swept home the loose puck late in the third period, capping a 20-minute session that was dominated by the Golden Gaels.
Still to be decided is the 2005 OUA champion, who will also earn the conference's lone berth in the 2005 CIS Women's Hockey Championship that runs from March 10 to 13 at Montreal's McGill University.

The Maple Leafs and the St. Michael's Majors could yet join forces for a renovated arena at the University of Toronto that would serve as a Leafs practice facility and a home for the Ontario Hockey League team.
Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment Ltd. has talked with U of T about renovating creaky Varsity Arena and Majors owner Eugene Melnyk has talked with the Leafs about the possibility of joining in.
U of T wants to make sure a new Varsity Arena serves the needs of its students, but the school likely won't offer much money to fund the project.
