Varsity Stadium was a collegiate stadium, primarily used for Canadian football, but occasionally playing host to soccer and other events, that was situated on the grounds of the University of Toronto on Bloor Street West, roughly at its intersection with St. George Street in Toronto, Ontario.
Varsity Stadium has for its entire history been host to the University of Toronto's collegiate Canadian football team, the Varsity Blues.
Varsity Stadium continued to host the Canadian intercollegiate championship, the Vanier Cup, but that too moved to larger quarters such as Skydome (now known as Rogers Centre) as the popularity of the collegiate championship grew.

Varsity finally got its much needed renovation in 1950, with the west grandstand replaced, and the east grandstand expanded to its modern configuration, bringing capacity in the grandstands to 21,739, and a maximum capacity approaching 27,000 with the use of collapsible bleachers.
If Varsity is a gem of a football stadium, it is equal to that as a soccer stadium, and offers superb sightlines for both sports, as well as an intimacy that is rare in modern stadia.
Varsity continues to be a useful stadium, being used for OUAA football, high school running events by the University of Toronto Schools, a few international soccer games, and summer athletic programmes.

The new stadium, which has been regarded as a key to the future of the money-losing Canadian Football League franchise, will be owned by the University of Toronto, with the Argos and the Canadian Soccer Association as primary tenants.
The rebuilding of Varsity Stadium was first announced in mid-January as a joint project between the U of T and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

In the meantime, it vows to keep mum about the details until an Agreement in Principle is put together between the new developers and a small team of U of T negotiators sometime by the end of the school-year.

There’s plenty of action to catch on campus this weekend as the Varsity Blues lacrosse, rugby and soccer teams open their 2003 regular season schedules on home turf.
The 2-1 Varsity Blues are at York on Wednesday evening, before returning to Christie Pits for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader versus the Western Mustangs.
A year ago the Varsity Blues finished fifth at the event and will chase a podium finish in 2003 as they take on some of the top crews from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England and the US.

Since Varsity Stadium was torn down, Toronto has lacked a facility that can be home to the vast array of sports that don't need the cavernous SkyDome and its 55,000-plus seats.
The former has no field at all in Toronto with the demise of Varsity Stadium, and rugby takes place at Fletcher's Field in Markham, a decrepit facility that is an embarrassment for our national squad.
A stadium of such woudl be built for other sports as well but with soccer mainly in mind.

In a process that will take approximately eight weeks to complete, the 78-year-old stadium will be torn down leaving a grass playing field and cinder track for U of T students in the intercollegiate and intramural programs.
The university has been unable to use the eastern stands of the stadium for several years because of safety concerns and officially closed the stadium in December 2001.
The $1.7 million project, which includes stadium demolition and fencing of the site, is a complex undertaking that requires taking down a majority of the building while leaving adjacent Varsity Arena untouched.

TORONTO -- The Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League on Wednesday moved closer to occupying a new stadium after Canada was named to host the FIFA men's under-20 soccer tournament in 2007.
The Canadian Soccer Assn. will oversee the 52-match tournament, with 15 games and the championship match to be staged in Toronto at a proposed $61 million Varsity Stadium on the grounds of the University of Toronto.
Varsity Stadium will also provide a home for the Varsity Blues, the university's football team.

Varsity’s first Canadian opponent was in the fall of 1881, when McGill scored a victory by ‘two tries to nothing’ on the front lawn at U of T. As for the nickname ‘Blues’, it seems that this reference wasn’t generally used until the 1930’s.
Varsity also claimed national titles in 1905 and 1909 though 1911; with the latter three being most historic as they represented the first Grey Cup championships, which is now the pinnacle of the Canadian Football League season.
Following the final expansion of Varsity Stadium in 1950, the Varsity Blues averaged 25,593 spectators per game and attracted a university record crowd of 26,764 for a game versus the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on October 21st.
