MACAU: Gen. Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira, the last Governor of Macau, holds his country's national flag as he leaves the Government Palace in Macau on Sunday.
Four officers of the Macau security forces folded the flag and presented it to Governor Vasco Rocha Vieira.
Governor Vieira clutched the flag to his chest and cast a last glance at the Government Palace, which has been his office since April 1991.

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen and visiting Governor of Macao Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira agreed on November 23 that Chinese President Jiang Zemin's successful visit to Portugal recently will push forward Sino-Portuguese bilateral ties.
Vieira responded by saying that the Macao government will improve public order by effectively cracking down on organized crime and cooperating with public security departments of China.
He said that he will make efforts to ensure the smooth transition and transfer of power in Macao by handling the issues during the transition period with a responsible attitude.

In 1502, Vasco da Gama was again sent out, this time with his uncle Vicente Sodre and his nephew Estevao, and a fleet of 20 ships to safeguard the interests of the Portuguese spice and commercial interests established in India by Cabral and of the Portuguese settled there.
In 1524, Vasco da Gama was again sent to India by the Portuguese Crown under João III to supersede the ViceroyEduardo de Menezes who was no longer master of the situation.
Vasco da Gama restored order but, at the end of the year, he died at Cochin.

On his epic voyage in 1497-99, with four vessels, Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope, passed the easternmost point reached by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, continued up the east coast of Africa to Malindi, and sailed across the Indian Ocean to Calicut.
This voyage opened up a way for Europe to reach the wealth of the Indies, and out of it grew the Portuguese Empire.
