Of the 37,000 Portuguese citizens who were living in Macau until 1999, there are just 1,200 still on the peninsula today, and Portuguese is only spoken at home now by no more than 10,000 of the 450,000 Macanese, most of whom are of mixed Portuguese and Chinese descent.

MACAU (CWNews.com) - Pope John Paul II (bio - news) turned down an invitation to visit Macau later this year before the Portugese colony reverts to Communist Chinese control, according to a spokesman for the Diocese of Macau on Friday.
The spokesman said the Holy Father had formally declined the invitation by Bishop Domingos Lam Ka Tseung and Governor General Vasco Rocha Vieira to visit before the handover of control on December 19.
The Holy Father is planning an Asian trip later this year to unveil the results of last year's Synod for Asia.
