Topic: Vasco da Gama Bridge

Luso Pages - Lisbon (Portugal) Bridges
The bridge originally opened (1966) as a four lane road bridge with a central barrier but the barrier was removed in 1990 to accommodate a fifth lane.
From the outset the bridge was designed to carry a road and a lower railway deck and it would have been the longest such bridge had this been implemented at construction.
In 1498 Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to the Indies around the Cape of Good Hope and in the 500th anniversary year of that exploit, the bridge was most appropriately named after him.

Vasco da Gama - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Da Gama was commissioned by King Manuel I of Portugal to find Christian lands in the East, and to gain Portuguese access to the commercial markets of the Orient.
Vasco da Gama extended the sea route exploration of his predecessor Bartolomeu Dias, who had first rounded Africa's Cape of Good Hope in 1488, culminating a generation of Portuguese sea exploration fostered by the nautical school of Henry the Navigator.
Da Gama's voyage was successful in establishing a sea route from Europe to India that would permit trade with the Far East, without the use of the costly and unsafe Silk Road caravan routes of the Middle East and Central Asia--which were also disappearing do to the collapse of the Mongol Empire.

Vasco da Gama Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bridge was opened to traffic on March 29, 1998, in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.
The bridge carries six road lanes, with a speed limit of 120 km/h, the same as motorways, except on one section which is limited to 100 km/h.
The cost of the bridge came at zero to the State, as it was built in the BOT (build-operate-transfer) system by Lusoponte, a private consortium which got a 40-year concession on the tolls of both Lisbon bridges.

It is the only bridge in the United States to feature the harp (parallel) stay arrangement on two vertical planes, a design which rivals suspension bridges for strength and beauty.
The decision to built a cable-stayed bridge instead of a suspension bridge was based on light traffic loads and a lack of good natural ground support for huge suspension anchorages.
The Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon, Portugal is an immense cable-stayed bridge project which took years to plan and design and just 18 months to construct.

Given that the Vasco da Gama Bridge is located at an environmentally sensitive site - the Tagus estuary - it was immediately agreed upon that the project would be located approximately 4km south of the Nature Reserve of the Tagus Estuary (RNET) in order not to directly affect this area.
One of the objectives of this study was to recommend measures to minimize and monitor the reduction of environmental impacts of the Vasco da Gama Bridge during construction and its operation.
During the construction phase of the bridge other descriptors were monitored but were meanwhile abandoned as they were no longer related to the impacts associated with the operation of this New Crossing.
