Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), an endothelial cell mitogen, has been shown to contribute to the increased endothelial cell adhesivity by increasing the expression of cell adhesion molecules ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule-1) and VCAM-1 (vascular cell adhesion molecule-1) on the endothelium.
VEGF levels (mean+/-SEM) were found to be significantly elevated during VOEs (703.1+/-119.0 pg/ml) when compared with those at steady state (258.0+/-57.8 pg/ml) and healthy controls (196.6+/-21.9 pg/ml) (p<0.001).

Vascular endothelial growth factor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important signaling protein involved in both vasculogenesis (the de novo formation of the embryonic circulatory system) and angiogenesis (the growth of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature).
Structurally VEGF belongs to the PDGF family of cystine-knot growth factors.
VEGF is also released in rheumatoid arthritis in response to TNF-α, increasing endothelial permeability and swelling and also stimulating angiogenesis (formation of capillaries).

Signaling of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 tyrosine kinase promotes rheumatoid arthritis through activation of monocytes/macrophages.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor-1 (VEGFR-1/Flt-1) were shown to be involved in pathological angiogenesis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
These results indicate that the VEGFR-1 TK signaling modulates the proliferation of bone marrow hematopoietic cells and immunity of monocytes/macrophages and promotes chronic inflammation, which may be a new target in the treatment of RA.

Increased Serum Level of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Pulmonary Tuberculosis
Japanese researchers investigated an increased serum level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) among patients with Crohn's disease.
The scientists believed that VEGF could be related to pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), so they analyzed the serum level of 43 patients with active TB, 29 patients with old TB, and 25 with acute bronchitis.
The researchers conclude that VEGF could be associated with the pathogenesis of pulmonary TB.
