Vasgen Sarkissian (Վազգեն Սարգսյան, Ararat, Armenia March 5, 1959 - October 27, 1999 Yerevan), also known as Vazgen Sarkisyan, was Prime Minister of Armenia for the Republican Party of Armenia from June 1999 until his assassination.
Sarkissian's rise to the top started when, as a former Communist Youth league organiser, he joined the growing movement for the mainly-Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh to be transferred from Azerbaijani to Armenian jurisdiction.
Sarkissian was killed, however, along with parliament speaker and former communist leader Karen Demirchyan and several other politicians when gunmen, headed by journalist Nairi Hunanyan took over the parliament building.

The assassinated prime minister, Vasgen Sarkissian, was widely viewed as the most powerful man in Armenia.
The lead gunman, according to reports, told Sarkissian, "You've drunk enough of our blood." As the massacre unfolded, the deputies were told that this was a coup aimed at removing national leaders "who sucked the blood of the people for too long" and who had plunged the country into poverty.
Sarkissian had seen him off at the airport, following a meeting held at Kocharian's office where the main topic was Karabakh.

Considering we had Vasgen Sarkissian (RIP), who as the minister of defence sent his own commandos around town killing opponents and mafia lords, so that he could put up his relatives as new mafia lords and politicians.
Compared to the corruption we saw during those times of early growing pains, today's situation is a marked progress.
