In 1999, Jirov was given his first world title try: In front of an HBO Boxing audience, he beat IBF world Cruiserweight champion Arthur Williams by a knockout in seven rounds at Biloxi, Mississippi, to become that organization's world Cruiserweight champion.
In 2002 Jirov, by then managed by the Sugar Ray Leonard promotion company, had begun to have career problems, and he was able to defend his crown once that year, beating former world Middleweight champion Jorge Castro of Argentina by a 12 round decision on February 1 at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix.
Jirov and Toney finally met on April 26 of 2003, and Jirov suffered his first career defeat, when he lost the IBF's world Cruiserweight title to Toney by a 12 round unanimous decision.

However, negotiations took long and Jirov spent more than one year outside the ring, time in which the IBF threatened to take away recognition of Jirov as world champion if he did not defend his crown soon.

Sure, Jirov's not a knockout fighter or even a natural heavyweight, but what Jirov does have going for him is a gas tank that never ends, which can't be said for Baby Joe by any stretch of the imagination.
Jirov is tireless, throws a ton of punches and, despite his reputation, knows how to move when he needs to.
Jirov also works the body like none other, which means that if Mesi comes in as soft in the middle as he did against Barret, it's going to be a long night for the kid from Buffalo.

Jirov, still young to the game of boxing has a promising future, including a plan to unify the cruiser belts.
In March of this year, Jirov was the underdog when he squared off against highly regarded and #1 world rated Joe Mesi in Las Vegas, but after scoring three knockdowns of the unbeaten contender, there would be no underestimating “The Tiger” in the heavyweight division again.
Jirov is one of my favorite fighters around and I think he will easily beat Moorer but Ruiz is another story.

The fight started off with the southpaw Jirov looking to stay on the outside and box Mesi but this game plan would not last long for Jirov as Mesi started to out box and out punch him throughout most of the first eight rounds of the scheduled ten round fight.
Jirov who is known as one of the best body punchers in the sport seemed to all but abandon his body attack for most of this fight.

Jirov, 30, returned to the Central Boxing Club shortly after his loss to Moorer, finding himself-once again-reaping for another title shot.
The piercing sound of the speedbags hitting the wooden platforms prevails the sound of the boxers hitting the mitts or the young adults pounding the Everlast heavybags, and abstracted at the loneliest corner of the gym Vasiliy drives a sledgehammer directly against a 40-inch tire.
When asked if he foresees a rematch with Moorer, Vasiliy stated, “I don’t think he wants to fight me. I was beating him for nine rounds.

World and Olympic champion Kazakhstan's cruiserweight boxer Vasiliy Jirov successfully defended his International Boxing Federation championship belt against American challenger Alex Gonzalez in a bout at Almaty's Palace of Sport on February 6, 2001.
Jirov knocked out Gonzalez just over ninety seconds into the fight, and the referee quickly signaled that the fight was over as the Kazakhstan champion bolted back to his corner.
After the fight, Jirov thanked the Kazakhstan's boxing community and all of Kazakhstan for their support, presented his championship belt to President Nursultan Nazarbaev, who was in attendance at the match, and announced that his American wife, Rebeccah, was pregnant with the couple's first child.

Jirov saying he’s taking it fight by fight-he’s significantly younger than Michael Moorer although he lost to Joe Mesi, he practically knocked Mesi out in the last round, Jirov had his only other loss to James Toney-- many people feel the best heavyweight in the world right now or at least one of them.
But again, although Jirov is a good puncher at cruiserweight, he’s an excellent puncher, at heavyweight you don’t assume he’s the same puncher he was at cruiserweight though he was able to drop Mesi a couple of times.
For Jirov, a win against Moorer, is, especially if it’s an effective win, certainly puts him in the mix, for guys like Chris Byrd, and the top of the division under Vitali Klitschko.

Originally Vasiliy Jirov was to defend his cruiserweight title vs. former two-time champ James Toney on HBO's co-feature under the Vernon Forrrest-Ricardo Mayorga welterweight unification fight until a rib injury caused a Jirov pullout.
Casamayor, 31, had over 300 amateur fights and has fought 29 times as a pro (28-1, 18 ko's) thus far over his 6 ½ year career.

While Lennox Lewis ponders whether he should take one more multimillion-dollar pay day in a rematch against Vitali Klitschko, and Mike Tyson's more pressing engagements seem likely to take place in court, Evander Holyfield says he will refuse to quit until he is once more the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
Holyfield, 40, will fight in Las Vegas on October 4 against James Toney, a hugely talented fighter who was reborn when he won the International Boxing Federation world cruiserweight title on points from Vasiliy Jirov during April.
Although Holyfield has won only two of his past seven engagements, and is regarded as a faded force after losing his last world title fight in December to the light-punching IBF world heavyweight champion Chris Byrd, he retains a vestige of appeal as a box office draw.

In winning titles in several weight classes --- the exact number depends on what sanctioning bodies one chooses to view as legitimate --- Toney has never suffered from feelings of insecurity no matter what weight class.
He has established greatness in wins over Michael Nunn, Vasiliy Jirov, and Mike McCallum.
Both fighters have benefitted from questionable decisions, for Toney, as noted in the Tiberi bout, and some even suggest in his Jirov win, and recently for Ruiz in his bout with Andrew Golota.

Given the scarcity of marketable, or identifiable, contenders beyond the Klitschkos and the barely present Mike Tyson, who has fought just once since Lewis humiliated him in June 2002, it will be a major upset if Mesi doesn't get to fight for one of the major belts by the end of the year.
Of course, that major upset could come courtesy of Vasiliy Jirov, the former cruiserweight titlist who faces Mesi March 13 in Las Vegas.
A win more impressive than his come-from-ahead survival against Monte Barrett in December, though, could put Mesi in line for a title shot as early as this summer.
