Alexeyev, Vasily   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Born in Pokrov, Alexeyev worked in a timber camp as a youth and gained the respect of fellow lumberjacks with his ability to lift massive logs.
Alexeyev first earned international attention in 1970, when he set three world records in one day, in the clean and jerk (221.5 kg/488.3 lb), the press (210.5 kg/464.1 lb), and the three-lift total (595 kg/1311.7 lb).
The press had been eliminated from Olympic competition, but Alexeyev broke his own Olympic record in the snatch (185 kg/407.9 lb), set a new world record in the clean and jerk (255 kg/562.2 lb), and won the gold medal for his two-lift total (440 kg/970.0 lb).

For those who may not remember him, Vasili Alexeyev is the great Russian Olympic Lifter who reigned in the super heavyweight class from the late 1960's till the late 1970's.
The Russians, with the exception of Alexeyev, came to York PA to train at the York Barbell facility on the 26 of September and stayed until the October 1st.

The VASILY ALEXEYEV Gallery: Odds & Ends
These are photos that I can't defintively place in the time line of Alexeyev's career.
A wrist injury kept Vasily from finishing the exhibition meet but, never one to disappoint his fans, he set a record in the one-armed snatch.
It is apparently a publicity shot from a Soviet sports publication and I have left all identifying credits in it to hopefully avoid copyright infringement.

Each entry covers the individual's birth, youth, how he got started in his sport, his athletic career, and Olympic performances, followed by a generally abbreviated passage on his post-Olympic life and accomplishments.
The readable text does not gloss over negative aspects, covering Thorpe's marital and drinking problems, Nurmi's surliness toward his competition, and Alexeyev's poor training habits.
This book should be useful in most collections, particularly for its information on Nurmi, Killy, and Alexeyev, which is less readily available than material on the American athletes.

I had a lot of fun finding stones and simulating my stone throw in the water.
I got the idea from an article I read about Vasily Alexeyev the great Russian weight lifter.
It said that one of his training techniques was to lift in the local river!!(see pic) So I practiced throwing the stone in chest deep water from the power position.
