This dictum of the poet Vasily Kirillovich Trediakovsky (1703-1769) was one of Tsvetaeva's favorites.
She used it as the epigraph to Part I of After Russia, her last published collection of poetry, and she paraphrases it in "Voloshin," making it the basis of her attitude toward historical accuracy in biographical prose.
The words come from Trediakovsky 's "An Opinion as to the Origin of Poetry and Verse as a Whole" ("Mnenie o nachale poezii i stikhov voobshche"), published in 1749.
